Welcome to your Chapman University Math Placement. Please read the following information carefully to learn how to take your exam.

Why do I need to take a Math Placement Exam?

Taking your Math Placement is important because it will place you in the math class that is appropriate for your level.

If you don’t take your exam (or don’t pass it), you will need to take Math 100 in your first year at Chapman. Doing so may delay your graduation.

Be prepared

If you do not pass the Math Placement Exam, you will have to take MATH 100 (Learning and Studying Mathematics for Understanding) during your first year at Chapman. This is an additional math class on top of your regular GE math requirement. For this reason, we strongly suggest that you take the test seriously and use the provided resources to prepare for the exam.

How do I take my Math Placement Exam?

You will take your exam on Canvas. To get started, log in to your Canvas account using your Chapman login.

On your Canvas dashboard, choose the course called “Math Placement Exams.” You will find more detailed instructions on how to take the exam within this module. Be sure to follow them.

Here are a few tips before you get started:

The exam should be taken on the Firefox browser. We also recommend you do not take it on a tablet, mobile device or Chromebook.
You can only take the exam once, so try your best on each question.
Budget your time wisely. You have 45 minutes to answer 25 questions.
You need a score of 20 to pass the exam.
Make sure to try the practice questions before taking the real exam. They will give you a good idea of the questions. If you struggle with the practice questions, refresh yourself on the topics they cover before taking the exam. These topics include:
- Numeric and symbolic computations.
- Quadratic equations.
- Properties of logarithms and exponentials.
- Interval notation.
- Radicals.
- Linear systems.
- Completions of the square.
- Inequalities, graphs of lines and parabolas.

What happens after I take my Math Placement Exam?

After you take your exam, you will receive an email confirmaiton. This email will also inform you of your next steps for math at Chapman.

How do I find my score after I take my exam?

Your score will be displayed at the end of the exam. If you want to check your score again later, you can find it on your unofficial transcript in your Student Center.

The minimum passing score is 20.

What happens if I don't take my Math Placement Exam?

Unless you are able to waive the Math Assessment, those who don't take it will have to take MATH 100 (Learning and Studying Mathematics for Understanding) during your first year at Chapman. Once you enroll at Chapman (i.e., after you begin taking classes here), you cannot take this class in transfer from a community college or other university.

Waiving the Math Placement Exam

You may be able to waive your Math Placement if either of the following is on file at Chapman.

Course credit earned from a passing score on the AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, IB Mathematics HL or IB Further Math HL exams. Make sure we have your scores on file if this is the case. (If you need to, check AP equivalencies here and IB equivalencies here.)
Credit from a transferable math class at a community college or other university (including dual enrollment class while in high school). We will apply the waiver to your account as soon as we receive and process your transcript.

Please note

For course credit or transfer credit to be on file, Chapman must have received record of it. Materials that have been submitted to Chapman but not received yet are not considered on file.

If you are looking to waive the exam, but your scores or transcripts will not be processed before your registration date, you should take the exam. Even if you do not receive a passing score, the exam will still be waived once your scores or transcripts are processed.
