Prior to coming to Chapman, he served as the Assistant Director of the Academic Advising Center and Coordinator of Academic Probation and Disqualification Services at CSU Fullerton. Joe Barrett, M.A.

Academic Advisor
Testing Coordinator and Specialist advisor for Dismissal Students

I earned both my B.A. and M.A. in American Studies from Cal State Fullerton where I also worked as an academic advisor prior to joining Chapman University in late 2007. My primary duties at Chapman are related to testing, dismissal advising, and to assist students with meeting all of their requirements so that they may graduate in a timely manner. Outside of advising I am interested in US cultural history and the built environment and may one day pursue a Ph.D. in order to study these things further. For the time being, however, I find great pleasure in reading, writing, photography, cycling and drinking coffee.

Dina Bartoloni Mai, M.S.

Assistant Director and Academic Advisor
Specialist advisor for all College of Performing Arts majors, and Art, Art History, and Graphic Design majors

I came to Chapman University in February 2012. Born and raised in the city of Orange, I am very excited to be working here at Chapman! I earned my B.A. in History with a minor in English and American Literature from the University of Southern California. After graduating from USC, I worked at UC Irvine as an Undergraduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Earth System Science. With a passion for assisting college students achieve academic success, I then moved to California State University, Fullerton, to work as a Academic Advisor in the Academic Advisement Center. While at CSUF I earned my M.S. in Education with an emphasis in Higher Education and a Certificate in Community College Studies. Outside of work, I enjoy going to the theater (I love musicals!), watching movies, TV, and my favorite sports teams (go Angels! go Trojans!), traveling, hiking, reading, and taking care of my dog, Betty White (yes, that's her name).

Crystal De La Riva, M.A.

Academic Advisor
Specialist advisor for most Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences majors (Creative Writing, English, French, History, Peace Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, Spanish)

I am a Chapman panther through and through! In 2009, I earned my B.A. in Psychology here at Chapman and recently completed Chapman’s M.A. program for Marriage and Family Therapy. I have called Orange home since birth and wouldn't have it any other way, as I adore the city’s the old towne essence and vintage charm. Ever since I can remember I have always had a desire to help others. I began working at Chapman in 2011 and joined Academic Advising in 2013. I have two dogs, Yumi and Coco, who are cooler than Betty White (Dina’s dog). I love to laugh, play stylist to my colleagues, go to concerts, listen to vinyl records, and make others smile. When I’m not in my office or in the classroom, you can usually find me at Target.

Michael Gamez, M.S.

Academic Advisor
Specialist advisor for the Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences (Health Science, Kinesiology/Applied Human Physiology, and Psychology majors)

I recently joined the Academic Advising team in May 2017, and I am very happy to be serving the students at Chapman University! I am originally from Fresno, CA where I attended Fresno City College and CSU-Fresno, and ultimately earned my BA in psychology. While at CSU-Fresno, I served as a peer advisor for TRiO and I loved this role because it allowed me to positively impact students. After this experience, I knew I wanted to continue working with college students. This led me to CSU-Fullerton where I earned my M.S. in Education with an emphasis in Higher Education, as well as a certificate in Community College Studies. Over the last two and a half years, I have worked in a variety of roles. at Associated Students, CSUF, Inc., Mt. San Antonio College, and Pasadena City College. I enjoy guiding students towards their academic goals, and helping them navigate life in college as well as afterwards. Within the next five years or so, I plan on continuing my education to earn a doctorate degree. When I am not working, I enjoy cooking (Thai especially), hiking, and binge-watching shows on Netflix and Hulu. I am so excited to work with you all, and help shape your experience at #ChapmanU!

Heather Garcia, M.S.

Academic Advisor
Specialist advisor for all Dodge College of Film and Media Arts majors

I came to Chapman University in 2017 from APU where I worked in Academic Advising and the Registrar’s office and I have also experience in housing and residence life when I worked at Texas Christian University and leadership development while working at Mount Saint Mary’s University. I earned my A.A. from Antelope Valley College, my B.A. in Liberal Studies from Cal State Northridge, and my M.S. in College Counseling and Student Development from Azusa Pacific University, so you could say I loved being a student and consider myself a lifelong learner. My passion is working in higher education and I am excited to be able to guide and assist Dodge College students with meeting all of their degree requirements. I was born and raised in Southern California and now live in Irvine with my husband and our two pets. When I’m not working you can find me trying a new recipe or restaurant, catching up on TV shows or movies, or traveling and collecting experiences!

James Mateik, M.S.

As a new member of the Academic Advising team, I am very excited to be at Chapman University! I grew up in Southern California where I graduated twice from California State University, Long Beach. The first time I received my Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, which led me to a brief career as a Forest Ranger. After a few years, I went back to CSULB and graduated with a Master of Science in Counseling, with my program emphasis in Student Development in Higher Education. Prior to coming to Chapman, I was a Career Center Advisor at California State University, Fullerton. I am passionate about serving others and assisting students with their journey in higher education. In my leisure time, I enjoy playing basketball, camping, traveling and spending time with family.

Irene Quinlan, M.A.

In the Spring of 2012, I joined the Academic Advising Center. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, from which I recently relocated, I was an Academic Advisor at Texas A&M University, San Antonio. I also received my B.A. in Psychology from Texas A&M and recently completed my M.A. in Counseling. I enjoy working with students and look forward to meeting with each of you as we work together to meet your academic goals. When I'm not working or studying, I enjoy getting acquainted with California by exploring all my newly adopted state has to offer.
