Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Ends Duration of Status and New Academic Restrictions

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has published a rule that ends “duration of status” (D/S) for F and J nonimmigrants, effective on September 15, 2026

The rule eliminates the D/S policy for international students, scholars, and dependents replacing it with a defined period of stay, plus a 30-day grace period. Anyone who wishes to remain in the U.S. beyond that time must apply to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for an extension of status (EOS). The rule also limits academic mobility such as changes in major or level of study.
