» Housing Emergencies

Students’ safety and security are our highest priorities. We consider these to be the foundation of a productive living and learning environment. Residence Life and First Year Experience staff members are trained to handle emergency situations and work closely with Public Safety and local emergency responders to ensure a safe residential community.

If you are in an urgent or emergency situation, please contact Public Safety and/or a Residence Life and First Year Experience staff member immediately. Sign up for Panther-Alert (Chapman University’s emergency notification system) to receive updated information during campus emergencies.

Too Much Noise

The best way to solve noise complaints is to politely address your neighbors yourself. Chances are that they may not realize that they are disturbing you. If they do not respond, attempt to contact the RA on duty. If you do not feel safe or the RA is unavailable, please contact Public Safety and ask them to contact the Resident Advisor on duty for your living area.

Suspected Drinking or Illegal Activity

If you feel safe, attempt to contact the RA on duty. If you do not feel safe or the RA is unavailable, please contact Public Safety and ask them to contact the Resident Advisor on duty for your living area.

Hate Incident

Any student who feels threatened or intimidated may bring charges against another student(s), staff or faculty member for alleged hate behavior, incident, act or a hate crime. Please contact Public Safety and/or a Residence Life and First Year Experience Staff member to report any hateful behavior you have been exposed to.

Facilities and Maintenance Requests

If you would like to request that a facilities or maintenance issue be addressed, you need to complete a Facilities Work Request. Please include as much detail as possible in your request so that the Facilities staff member will know exactly what the problem is in your room/apartment. To prevent delay, ensure you are selecting your correct room/apartment number from the drop down in the work request system. The time of completion depends on the severity of the issues they are currently responding to.

Call Public Safety immediately for emergency situations (such as plumbing issues, electrical hazards, broken windows or doors) that could cause safety/health risks or property damage, and that occur after-hours (outside AM-PM Monday through Friday). Provide the dispatcher with all pertinent information, including your housing assignment and the exact nature of the problem, and they will contact the necessary Facilities staff member to respond to your emergency.

Note: For a clogged toilet, please try to plunge the toilet yourself first. If that does not work, complete a Facilities Work Request and contact Public Safety (if after hours).

Lockouts

If you are locked out of your room/apartment during normal business hours, you can contact the Residential Support Desk in the Henley Basement or the Office of Residence Life and First Year Experience at (714) 997-6603. After business hours, please visit the Residential Support Desk in the Henley Basement for assistance. During late night or weekend hours, call Public Safety.

Note: Each student receives one free lockout per year. Residents are charged a $5.00 fine for each subsequent lockout.
