»Wilkinson College Undergraduate Student Research Grants

Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences offers a limited number of $500 research grants for undergraduate students majoring in the college’s programs. These grants assist with expenses related to completing capstone or significant research/creative projects.

Application Guidelines

  • Students must complete the application and include their faculty advisor’s name.
  • Budget proposals should not exceed $500. Prioritize items as partial funding may be awarded.
  • Funds are reimbursable only. Award emails will outline the reimbursement process.
  • Submit all receipts together within the academic year of application.

Approved Reimbursable Expenses: 

1. Materials and Supplies

  • General supplies: paper, ink, notebooks, etc.
  • Art supplies: canvases, paints, clay, etc.
  • Construction materials: wood, metal, hardware for prototypes.
  • Fieldwork tools: measuring tapes, survey equipment.

2. Technology and Software (prior approval required, please contact Makayla Scott makascott@chapman.edu

  • Software licenses: SPSS, MATLAB, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Data storage: external hard drives, cloud storage.
  • Hardware rentals: laptops, cameras, drones.

3. Data Collection

  • Survey costs: printing or online platforms (e.g., Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey).
  • Travel for data collection: transportation, lodging, meals.
  • Database or archive access: subscription fees.

4. Professional Services (prior approval required, please contact Makayla Scott makascott@chapman.edu

  • Printing and binding: final reports or presentations.
  • Editing, formatting, translation, or transcription services.
    Professional services must be paid directly by Chapman; contact Makayla Scott.

5. Travel and Fieldwork

  • Transportation: gas, airfare, train tickets.
  • Accommodation: overnight stays.
  • Field permits or site access fees.

6. Presentation and Dissemination

  • Conference fees: registration, travel, lodging.
  • Poster printing.
  • Publication fees for academic journals.

7. Miscellaneous

  • PPE: gloves, masks, lab coats.
  • Communication: postage, shipping.

Non-Reimbursable Expenses

  • Funds cannot be used to purchase fixed assets, such as equipment, cameras, GPS devices, hard drives, laptops, or iPads.
  • Funds cannot be used to purchase gift cards as incentives for research participants if you do not have IRB approval.
