While the program does not offer tuition fellowships or scholarships, there are a few opportunities that graduate students take advantage of during their time in the program. These opportunities aren’t able to fully fund one’s time in the program, but, can be used as supplementary financial support throughout a student’s time and can serve as great professional development opportunities.
Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Program
Our Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) program allows first-year students who take the spring class in Teaching Composition to apply for one of the GSI positions for the following fall. The selected GSIs each teach a section of composition in the fall, while also enrolled together in a second pedagogy class. This position does not come with an award that covers tuition, but, does come with a teaching stipend equal or greater to that of other part-time faculty. We also have some students teaching with community organizations that are not directly related to our program. This speaks to the opportunities our students seek and create and the value of the expertise they are developing.
Graduate Assistantships
In addition, we have a few hourly wage grad assistant positions. These are for MA program support and individual faculty research or teaching support. Occasionally, we are able to partner with Chapman Magazine or the Dean of Students to fund a position that serves their special projects, and we have had students work in Admissions or other units on campus. These positions are usually between 9 and 19 hours a week and are a great way to build experience in a specific realm of higher ed or industry.
