» Graduate Admission for International Applicants

With COVID-19 (Coronavirus) affecting countries around the world, we are currently working with our students on their options for Fall 2020 enrollment. We are currently planning to offer three ways to provide courses in the fall – in-person, remote, and a hybrid of the two. Due to travel restrictions and U.S. Embassy closures world-wide, our international students may need to enroll online outside the U.S. for the fall term. Please contact your graduate academic program of interest directly to find out more information on their remote learning options for the Fall 2020 term. If the situation changes, we will send you updates about studying in the United States and COVID-19 as soon as possible. Please stay safe and healthy through this health emergency.

Our graduate programs are ideal for international students. The curriculum, networking, and hands-on learning opportunities prepare you to succeed in the United States or anywhere around the world. Available opportunities include internships, graduate research, study abroad options, and student clubs and activities.

Chapman is home to students from over 80 countries, and all 50 states and territories in the U.S.

How to Apply as an International Student

General application information is available on our Apply page. You can find instructions for your specific program of interest there. Below is the application information for international applicants.

The following programs do not accept international students: MMS Physician Assistant and Doctor of Pharmacy.

International students are eligible for all other graduate programs.

Language Test

Chapman’s language of instruction is English. As such, we require international students, who have not received a degree at an institute where English was the only language used, to demonstrate English proficiency at the time of admission with the submission of English language exams. Chapman does not offer an ESL program for international students on campus.

If you completed your undergraduate degree or higher, at an institution where English was not the primary language of instruction, you must submit minimum scores from one of the following English-language exams:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 80 (Internet-Based Test) or 20 in each section (revised Paper-Delivered Test)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.5
  • Cambridge English Advanced Exam (CAE): 180
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): 53

The following programs require higher minimum scores. Applicants to these programs can view the required minimum scores here.

  • Dodge College Graduate Programs
  • MBA Programs
  • M.S. in Accounting
  • Ph.D. in Computational Data Sciences
  • Ph.D. in Education

Exam scores must come directly from the testing agency to Chapman. They must be taken within two years of the date of application.

Official Academic Documents

Your application requires official academic transcripts/mark sheets from the university you earned your degree in both the original language and English. If your university does not provide translations of your transcripts/mark sheets, you will need to have them translated. They should be translated line-by-line, word-for-word exactly. You must submit the official academic transcript/mark sheet and the official translation.

While unofficial copies of academic transcripts/mark sheets can be used to evaluate and review an application, official documents will be required upon acceptance.

Applicants from Chinese institutions should request and submit official transcripts directly through the China Higher Education Student Information and Career Center (CHESICC). Requests are processed by CHESICC and are sent electronically to Chapman’s Office of Graduate Admission. You will not need to send a paper copy of your transcript. Visit CHESICC’s How to Apply page to get started.

If you attended a university in the United States, please have the institution send us official transcripts.

Your diploma is not required with your application. However, enrollment into Chapman will be dependent upon submission of your official diploma. Should you be admitted, your diploma needs to be submitted in both the original language and English. If your university only provides one official diploma, bring the original documents into our office at the time classes begin.

Official Transcripts can be sent directly from the university to Chapman University via email to admtranscript@chapman.edu or via post to:

Chapman University

GPA Evaluation

Once your transcripts are received, Chapman will conduct an in-house evaluation to determine your U.S. equivalent GPA. Chapman does not accept outside evaluations.
