Interview with Esteban Zuluaga

» Interview with Esteban Zuluaga

Esteban came to the U.S. from Colombia to earn his MFA in Film and Television Producing.

Here are his tips for finding success and getting the most out of grad school as an international student.

Why did you choose Chapman?

First, because its film school is considered one of the best in the country. For instance, Chapman students created Stranger Things, the Netflix series.

Secondly, because the culture and passion shared by students and faculty. Chapman has something unique, and that is its students. It is a huge family that understands and practices the sense of community.

How was your transition coming to Chapman?

Coming from Colombia to Chapman was amazingly smooth. The support I had from the school was tremendous. They helped with all the logistical details and made me feel I wasn’t alone at any time.

What have you enjoyed about your time as a student here?

I’ve enjoyed every day since I came here. The amazing classes and strong relationships I’ve developed have been enriching and valuable.

I have spent most weekends on sets producing films, and I have learned how crucial collaboration, discipline and enthusiasm are to succeed in this field.

I have found student life to be the perfect balance between hard work and fun. Events like pre-screenings of movies that include Q&As with directors, producers and writers from Hollywood is just one example of how being a Chapman student can be fun and beneficial.

What services and resources have helped you the most in development for your future career?

Having access to experienced faculty members and guest speakers is a privilege that only we have. For instance, having a one-on-one conversation with Jay Cox [producer of Avatar, The Jungle Book and The Dark].

Also, Career and Professional Development has helped me polish my resume and cover letters so I can get internships and jobs more easily.

In addition, all the events I’ve attended with alumni have helped me expand my network and get to know people in the industry.

What advice would you give to someone considering Chapman?

Coming to Chapman has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. If Chapman offers a program you like, don’t hesitate to apply.

As an international student, I advise you to work hard on the application essays. We all have wonderful stories to tell, and experiences to share, but it takes time and effort to articulate them well enough for the opportunity to come here.
