Applying for Financial Aid

» Applying for Financial Aid

If you’re looking to use financial aid to help pay for college, you will need to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The FAFSA is a free, online form that will help you determine if you are eligible for student aid. This includes federal aid (grants, work study and low-interest loans) and potentially school and state aid. Submitting the FAFSA is essential if you want to be considered for federal, state and most forms of Chapman financial aid.

Here are three steps to follow to successfully submit your FAFSA:

Step 1: Gather Required Financial Information

Your financial aid eligibility is based on your and your parents’ income from the previous year’s tax return.

To speed up the process, you may be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. This allows you to export data from your tax return into your FAFSA. Using the tool will:

  • Speed up the process to complete your FAFSA
  • Improve accuracy of submitted information
  • Reduce the need for later verification of income

Step 2: Start Your FAFSA Early

You can complete your FAFSA beginning on October 1. We recommend submitting as early as you can. Submitting your FAFSA by the deadline ensures:

  • You will will receive full consideration for all types of eligible aid
  • Schools (including Chapman) can provide an accurate financial aid package after admission

Step 3: Submit Before the Deadline

If you can’t submit early, at least be sure you submit before the deadline. While FAFSA deadlines differ by school and state, Chapman's deadlines for first-year students applying in the fall are:

  • November 15 for Early Action or Early Decision.
  • March 2 (priority deadline) for Regular Decision.
  • March 2 (hard deadline) for California residents for Cal Grant consideration.

Transfer students should ensure they are submitting for the correct academic year and submit their FAFSA as soon as possible.

Additional Considerations

  • Chapman University’s FAFSA school code is 001164.
  • You will need to re-submit your FAFSA every year you expect to be receiving financial aid.
  • When submitting your FAFSA, use an email you will check regularly and continue to check while in college.
  • Only U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens are eligible to qualify for federal financial aid. You can learn more about FAFSA eligibility here.
  • Undocumented students can learn more about financial resources here.
