ยป Undeclared/Exploratory Students

Students who aren’t sure what they want to major in at Chapman can apply and be admitted to the university as an “undeclared” student.

Once they enter Chapman, they are considered “Exploratory” students. This is because current students have several ways to explore various academic and career pathways as they decide on a major.

Timeline to select a major

At Chapman, you’ll need to declare a major before you earn 60 credits. Earning 60 credits takes about 4 semesters (2 years).

Before the 60-credit mark, you'll focus on three things:

  1. Completing your General Education (GE) courses. GE courses are required courses that all students take, regardless of their major. In many cases, these courses help students narrow down their major/minor choices.
  2. Taking major/minor exploration courses to better explore areas of interest. It is important to start discovering what you like (and what you don’t like).
  3. Utilizing helpful resources and programming to learn about majors and careers.

Exploratory resources and programming

From your first day of class up until you select your major, you’ll have resources and programming to help you explore your academic opportunities.

  • Exploratory Majors Program: In this program you’ll select an academic pathway and learn more about navigating the university.
  • Exploratory Advising: You'll have a dedicated Exploratory Advisor who can help you narrow down your academic interests and explore different majors. You can also explore careers and study abroad options.
  • Majors in Minutes: Our “speed-dating” event where you will learn about several majors from other current students.
