What is the cost of the Summer Film Academy for High School Students?

The cost of the 2020 Summer Film Academy is $3,100. All costs include housing in the dorms, meals in the cafeteria, field trips and all equipment used for the program. Flights and transportation arrangements to and from the program are not included in the cost. Students will need to bring spending money for the two field trips.

Who is eligible to apply?

Students entering their junior or senior year of high school are eligible to apply.  (11th or 12th grade)

What additional requirements are there for International Students?

  • All of the same Application Requirements are required for International Students, there is just one additional question regarding your experience with English on the application.
  • Applicants do not need to submit an English language exam score.
  • International applicants will not need to apply for a F-1 visa to participate in the program, and therefore do not need an I-20 from Chapman University.

Are scholarships and/or financial aid available for the Summer Film Academy?

Scholarship applications will be available to students once they are admitted to the program.  Scholarships will be granted on a case by case basis, and are determined on the talent and need of the student.

What components do I have to submit with my application?

There are 6 components. 

  1. Application
  2. Personal Statement
  3. Written Essay
  4. Creative Resume
  5. Letter of Recommendation (Submitted though SlideRoom)              
  6. Transcript.

Will you notify me when my application is complete?

The Dodge College Summer Film Academy committee will only notify students who are missing a component to their application. Once you click submit in SlideRoom your application is considered final.

When will I be notified of an admissions decision to the Summer Film Academy?

Students will be notified via e-mail on April 13, 2020.

I applied last year, didn’t get admitted and want to re-apply? Do I need to submit a new application?

You will need to submit a new application and we encourage students to update all materials.   

Will attending Dodge College’s Summer Film Academy increase my chances of being admitted to Chapman University as an undergraduate student?

While admission to the Summer Film Academy does not guarantee admission into Dodge College, it should assist students with their applications when applying to our program or other film schools. The Summer Film Academy will give students an inside look into Dodge College, the programs we offer, and what our environment is really like. It will also provide training that should assist students with their application materials they will be submitting on college applications. We also do a session about applying to film schools that gives some advice and tips on the application process

Will I need spending money?

Students will need spending money for meals on the two field trips, souvenirs and/or miscellaneous items they would like to buy while attending the Summer Film Academy.

Where will I live on campus?

Students are required to stay in our newest dormitory, Sandhu Residence Hall. Upon arrival to Chapman University, students will be assigned to a roommate. Each dorm room has its own bathroom.

Will I have access to a computer? Should I bring a laptop? Is the campus wireless?

Chapman University provides free WIFI to everyone on campus.  PC computers will be supplied to all students in the editing labs during the program.  You may also choose to bring your personal laptop.  If you bring your own personal electronics to the Summer Film Academy, Dodge College of Film and Media Arts assumes no responsibility for loss or stolen items.

Will I be able to have a car on campus?

No cars are allowed on campus during the Summer Film Academy. 

Who are the instructors of the program?

The Summer Film Academy is a unique experience lead by seasoned film professionals from the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Tom Ptasinski is our Lead Faculty Instructor and Rachel Bass is our Lead Instructor for the program. Visit out Summer Film Academy Team page to find out more information about the instructors.

Do my family and friends get to see the films I make?

There will be a final screening the last night of the program in our Folino Theater at Marion Knotts Studios. All family and friends are welcome to attend!

Do students have access to gym facilities?

Students will not have access to any gym equipment or facilities while attending the summer film academy.

Will there be sheets, towels, pillows, and toilet paper supplied?

The dorms will provide sheets, pillows, and all paper goods.  Students can bring their own blankets or pillows if they desire. Students will need to bring their own bath towels for the showers.
