Dr. Rakesh Kumar Tiwari is currently an Assistant Professor of Biopharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences. He joined CUSP in September 2013. He was an Assistant Professor in Department of Life Sciences at Shiv Nadar University in India for a short time. He received his Ph.D. (2006) in Organic Chemistry from Dr. B.R. Ambedker Center for Biomedical Research, University of Delhi, one of the most reputed Institutes and Universities in India. During his Ph.D. research work, he developed several new classes of antimicrobial compounds using indoles. After his Ph.D, he was awarded a prestigious and highly competitive Young Scientist Grant from Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. He became involved for the synthesis of a new class of DNA intercalating agents.

In 2007, Dr. Tiwari’s strong interest to conduct research in the area of application of chemistry in biology led him to pursue his postdoctoral research at Dr. Keykavous Parang’s laboratory in College of Pharmacy, University of Rhode Island. His postdoctoral work resulted in the synthesis of several peptide nanomaterials, kinase inhibitors as anticancer compounds, and many neuroprotective agents. Dr. Tiwari was awarded 2013 research excellence postdoctoral award from the University of Rhode Island. He was also a recipient of American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship. He is a member of American Chemical Society, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, American Association for Advancement of Science, and American Peptide Society.

Research Interests

Dr. Tiwari has a keen interest at the interphase of chemistry and biology with a focus on using peptides and small molecules in solving biological problems. Major areas of interest include developing CN2097 peptide analogs for neurotherapeutics, synthesizing fatty acyl derivatives of antibacterial peptides for MRSA, developing peptide-drug conjugates (PDC) for prostate cancer targeted therapy. Other areas of interest are optimizing dasatinib conjugates for developing specificity in protein kinases, peptide based drug delivery system, and development of new synthetic methodologies. Dr. Tiwari has authored 81 peer-reviewed articles, 1 patent, 1 book chapter, and 63 meeting abstracts.
