» About the Center for Global Education

The Center for Global Education provides a diverse portfolio of semester abroad, faculty-led, and international internship programs to prepare students for an increasingly integrated and multicultural world. Global citizenship is a high priority for Chapman, and we offer thousands of courses in hundreds of locations worldwide.

The CGE collaborates with multiple departments and faculty on campus to prepare students throughout the entire process: the application, pre-departure, while abroad, and returnee phases for all CGE programs. We also welcome exchange students and prepare them for life at Chapman. The CGE hosts many conferences and events throughout the year to engage the Chapman community in global citizenship on campus.

Our staff are experts in international education and seek ways to increase student engagement in overseas programs. We represent Chapman in international education organizations and conferences around the world.

+ - History of Global Education at Chapman

Global educational opportunities started at Chapman in 1965 with the creation of the World Campus Afloat program. Chapman was the academic sponsor for World Campus Afloat (now known as Semester at Sea) until 1975. In 1980, Professor Betsy Traux inaugurated an exchange program with King Alfred’s College, Winchester, England. In 1992, Professor Ken Tye founded the Center for International Education. In 1994, Chapman initiated short-term travel courses with the Chapman Quest program in Costa Rica.

In 2004, the Center for Global Education was created as a centralized location for international activities at Chapman, bringing together study abroad and international student services. Since then, the CGE has expanded to include semester and academic year study abroad, interterm and summer travel courses, summer international internships and international student and scholar services.  The Center for Global Education is committed to Chapman University’s mission to provide personalized education that leads students to “productive lives as global citizens.”
