»Student First Aid Team
The Chapman University Student First Aid Team provides first aid response for medical emergencies at large-capacity events such as football games, outdoor concerts, Greek life bus events, and Chapman Celebrates. This is a paid campus position and is treated as a professional role with a strong emphasis on reliability, preparedness, and teamwork. Members are expected to be committed and take their responsibilities seriously. Our team places a strong emphasis on professional development and networking. Many members have gone on to graduate programs, internships, and healthcare-related jobs through connections built within the team. Because of this, we are highly selective and seek students who are dependable, engaged, and motivated. The student team members are all CPR and First Aid certified at the Basic Life Support level and include some members who are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
FAQs
What is the application, hiring, and training process like?
- We hire annually in August at the beginning of the Fall semester and occasionally during the early part of the Spring semester, which are announced on the first aid team Instagram page (@ChapmanFirstAid).
- Applications are reviewed, and selected candidates are invited for interviews.
- If hired, members complete orientation and required training modules.
- New members initially work shifts as a fourth team member, paired with a Field Training Officer (FTO), where they are trained in all three roles: radio operations, medical documentation (scribe), and patient assessment.
- Once competency is demonstrated, members are officially signed off by our Fire Marshal and cleared to work as part of a three-person team.
What qualifications do I need to apply?
- A current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. Free BLS Training is available on campus to all students, staff, and faculty.
- While not required, we prioritize applicants with higher-level certifications such as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), Lifeguard, or similar clinical credentials.
What are the required work hours?
- We hold mandatory monthly team meetings, typically lasting 1–1.5 hours, which include training, skills practice, and educational components.
- Event coverage is assigned through a shift bidding process. Available shifts are released, and team members bid for those they are available to work.
- Members are expected to work at least once per month, though many work multiple shifts monthly.
- Shifts are usually around 4 hours, making them very compatible with student schedules.
- Coverage is for scheduled events, not on-call shifts.
- Every team member must work commencement
What events does the team work?
Our team provides medical coverage for a wide range of campus events, including:
- Large-scale events and concerts
- Dodge Masterclass events
- Musco Center performances
- Undie Run and other student events
This role offers hands-on experience and counts toward patient care hours, which is especially beneficial for students pursuing healthcare-related graduate programs.
