» Move-Out Information and Tips 2023

  • Start packing sooner rather than later. Students are required to move out within 24 hours of their last final or by Saturday, May 20th at noon-- whichever comes sooner-- so getting a head start on packing can eliminate a lot of unnecessary stress during finals week. If you make a trip home prior to your move out date, it is a good idea to take a few items or pieces of furniture that you won't need for the rest of the year to lessen the load on move out day.

  • Make sure you are up to date and informed about your residence’s move out procedures. Attend a community meeting to hear important move out information, confirm your finals schedule, and sign up for a checkout date before Monday, May 8th to avoid a $75 improper check out fine. If you need to stay later than May 20th at 12 pm then you must email your building manager by Friday, May 5th to be granted permission. Contact your Resident Advisor or a Residence Life representative if you have any questions about move out procedures.

  • Make a move out plan. Decide how you will be moving your belongings—will you be transporting them by car, shipping them, or storing them over the summer? Communicate move out plans with roommates and family to ensure everything goes smoothly and get any help you might need.

  • Set Goals. The task of packing up your dorm becomes much more manageable when scaled down and sorted into achievable goals. For example, in the days leading up to your check out date, set a goal to pack up your kitchen ware, and the next day focus on packing up and sorting through your clothes. Separating these tasks over a stretch of time can make the process seem much less daunting.

  • Assess the use of your belongings. If you have items or clothing that have gone untouched all year, consider donating them or giving them away. Donation pods will be available at Main Campus, Chapman Grand, and Panther Village, accepting furniture & kitchen appliances, clothing & shoes, and e-waste donations. Assess how often you used certain items and appliances to reduce waste and avoid bringing more than you need when move-in comes.

Sustainability During Move-Out

The Office of Sustainability is dedicated to spreading awareness about sustainability on campus and implementing efforts to make the University more eco-friendly. During move-out, the Office is dedicated to diverting as much waste as possible but rather redirecting gently used items to be donated and reused. Donation bins can be found on Main Campus, Chapman Grand, and Panther Village. Eco-Rep members can be located at each donation station to assist in directing items for donation to their proper donation bin alongside redirecting any items ineligible for donation to the dumpsters.
