» Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the science of adapting the work environment to fit the employee so the work is more safe and efficient. It focuses on designing workstations, tools and tasks for safety, efficiency and comfort. Efficient ergonomic designs and work practices reduce occupational injuries, discomfort and fatigue, and improve productivity and employee job satisfaction.

At Chapman University, ergonomics support is provided through a collaborative effort between the Office of Human Resources, the Office of Risk Assessment, the employee, their supervisor, and their department's leadership. It is our goal to provide you with the safest work environment that minimizes musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), also known as repetitive stress injury (RSI) among other names.

Ergonomics Process at Chapman University

  1. The ergonomics process at Chapman begins with the employee completing the ergonomics intake form below.
  2. The employee will be notified via email that they have been assigned online ergonomics training that they'll need to complete.
  3. An Ergonomics Specialist will then contact the employee to schedule an evaluation.
  4. Once the evaluation is completed, a report is created and submitted to our office by the Ergonomics Specialist. This can take up to one (1) week.
  5. If the report contains equipment recommendations, HR will then inform the employee's home department, who will review the request, approve or deny, and follow up with Purchasing to order the equipment.
  6. The item(s) will be delivered to Receiving, who will deliver it to the employee's on-campus office.
  7. The employee notifies the Office of Human Resources that they have received the equipment.
  8. The Office of Human Resources will follow up with the employee once they have had a chance to use the equipment for one to two weeks.
