Men’s Health Month
Supporting men's mental and physical health is essential to fostering a healthy, productive, and inclusive campus environment. Men often face societal pressures that discourage them from seeking help, leading to untreated mental health concerns and preventable physical health issues. By promoting awareness, open dialogue, and accessible resources, university staff can play a critical role in creating a culture where all individuals—regardless of gender—feel supported in prioritizing their well-being.
On average, men in the Unites States live 75.8 years – that is about 5.3 years less than women. Men also have a higher rate for most of the leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and suicide.
- 14.7% of men aged 18 and older are in fair or poor health.
- 30.9% of men aged 18 and older had five or more drinks in 1 day at least once in the past year.
- 28.3% of men aged 18 and older met the 2018 federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic and strength training.
- 12.5% of men aged 18 and older currently smoke cigarettes.
- 41.6% of men aged 20 and older are obese.
- 51.9% of men aged 20 and older have hypertension.
- 10.4% of men younger than age 65 don’t have health insurance coverage.

1 in 8 people globally live with a mental health disorder, while in the U.S., around
20.4 million adults had a substance use disorder in 2022 - many also managing coinciding
mental health challenges. These figures underscore the importance of fostering a supportive

Know the Signs of ASD
ASD – or Autism Spectrum Disorder – is a developmental disorder that affects one’s ability to socialize and communicate with others. ASD can also result in restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities (stereotypical behaviors). Autism is known as a “spectrum disorder” due to the wide range of symptoms one may experience.
- ASD begins before age three and will continue throughout life.
- 1 in 31 children in the U.S. have autism.
- 1 in 45 adults in the U.S. have autism.
- Average age of intervention in the U.S is 5 years old.
Understanding typical developmental milestones can help to identify early signs of ASD.
Raising understanding and awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder not only fosters inclusion but also empowers individuals and communities to support neurodiversity with compassion and respect.
