Hello,
I am looking for volunteers to participate in a research study about the sense of agency, led by
Dr. Aaron Schurger. The study will take place at the Chapman University Brain Institute
located in Irvine, California. The study will take no more than 2.5 hours, for which you will be
compensated up to $37.5 ($7.5/30mins). As a Chapman University student, you could
potentially receive school credits.
Participation is completely voluntary. The purpose of this research study is to examine the
mechanisms of the sense of agency in the brain through the use of TMS (transcranial
magnetic stimulation) and EMG (electromyography) recording. For more information on TMS
please visit this link. There will be 2 pre-screenings that take approximately 15 minutes
each. These screenings will be used to determine your eligibility for the experiment. You will
not be compensated for your participation in these pre-screenings.
In the study, you will be asked to make voluntary finger movements, and be induced to make
similar finger movements by the TMS. You will then be asked questions related to how much
agency you feel over these movements on a computer screen. If you are 18 or older, and:
1. Do NOT have a pacemaker
2. Do NOT have metal implants in the head
3. Do NOT have a history of a seizure disorder
4. Are NOT currently regularly taking any medications that lower seizure
threshold
5. Are NOT currently pregnant
You may be eligible to participant in our study. If you are interested, please contact me at
