» Statistical Consulting

The Office of Research is proud to support a collaborative agreement between Chapman and the University of California-Irvine providing full access to the UCI’s Center for Statistical Consulting.

Through a special agreement between UCI’s Center for Statistical Consulting (CSC) and the Institute for Clinical and Translations Science Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) Unit, Chapman researchers have full access to both CSC and BERD statistical consulting resources.

UCI offers help and collaboration with:

1. Study design, protocol development and preparation – We help with:

  • Preparing/developing specific aims/objectives and hypotheses
  • Selecting appropriate primary and secondary outcome measures
  • Study design to achieve study aims efficiently
  • Sample size and power calculations (and associated ethical considerations)
  • Analytic plans that match specific aims
  • Implementation strategies: randomization schemes, blinding etc.
  • Development of Data Safety and Monitoring Committee (e.g., for clinical trials) including identification of statistician members
  • IRB application – the scientific and statistical elements indicated here are parts of an IRB application
2. Data analysis – We offer data analysis for many purposes, including data analysis for:
  • Pilot studies needed for grants
  • ICTS pilot projects and career development
  • Research papers, including analysis for response to reviewers
  • Abstracts and poster

3. Statistical advice – Our free weekly Drop-in Biostatistics Consulting (CHOC or UCI),

This is a great opportunity to get informal advice on a range of topics. After informally describing your research ideas or projects, you can get advice on suitable statistical analysis, study design, presentation of results (e.g., graphics), data analysis software, etc. You can then schedule additional consultation time if needed.

4. Research database design advice – Our BERD unit also provides advice on how to design your research database (e.g., using REDCap from the ICTS Center for Biomedical Informatics). This includes, but not limited to, electronic data capture forms, codebooks/data dictionaries, and data quality assurance/control procedures appropriate for your study

5. Research proposal preparation – our focus is on the scientific and study design components of the research initiative; we do not do general grant editing and preparation.
