+ - Office of Research’s Faculty Opportunity Fund

The Office of Research’s Faculty Opportunity Fund provides competitive merit-based support for short-term non-renewable projects as described below. These projects are intended to support Chapman University faculty in the development of new and innovative research, scholarship and creative activity.  Specifically, this program aims to:

  • Elevate the national visibility and reputation of Chapman University faculty for their excellence in creative, scholarly and research accomplishments.
  • Provide faculty with opportunities to catalyze new and innovative areas.
  • Expand the base of competitive research, scholarship and creative activity to increase external support in these areas.

The intent of the fund is to support (1) activities in the arts and humanities where the outcome is the development of a substantive scholarly or creative work and; (2) research in all areas for faculty who are developing new lines of research, where a primary goal is the submission of requests for external funding. During the 2019-20 cycle, a total of $250,000 will be available for the Faculty Opportunity Fund with awards up to $15,000 for a period of 12 months depending on the type of award, project goals, and necessary budget. All full-time faculty (tenure track and non-tenure track) are eligible for this program.  Involvement of graduate students and/or undergraduates is strongly encouraged. Revised Faculty Opportunity Fund proposals from prior years that address previous reviewer comments are also encouraged.

Applications are due on Friday, February 7, 2020, at 5 pm.

A list of current and prior awardees and project titles is available on the Office of Research blog. Congratulations to our current Wilkinson College FOF awardees, Professors Barnard, Leahy, Luévano, Stearns, and Walsh, and 2018-19 FOF awardees, Professors Klein, Nakell, and Takaragawa.

Eligibility: All full time Wilkinson College faculty members may apply. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Application Process

Complete the Subvention Grant online application.

Provide a clear and concise description of the work for which you request funding, its role in your larger research agenda or creative plan, and why subvention is needed.

Upload a single PDF with external materials that document your arrangements with the entity to which subvention would be paid. For example, a contract, letters requiring a subvention payment, an invitation to exhibit, etc.

Upload a detailed budget that includes all subvention expenses. Present your budget as an uploaded spreadsheet or as a list. Include all sources of support (e.g. from your department, publisher, exhibit host, etc.) and all expense categories (how the funds would be spent, e.g. copyright permission, image rights, publisher subvention, CD production and distribution, artwork shipping and crating, etc.) and the amounts associated with each. Identify the specific items in your budget to which a Subvention Grant would be applied.
