»Research at the School of Pharmacy

In just a decade, researchers at Chapman University’s School of Pharmacy (CUSP) have placed our institution on the world stage. Working across seven clinical sites and in 18,200 square feet of on-campus laboratory space, our faculty specialize in eight forward-focused disciplines, including bioinformatics and computational biology, drug design and discovery and pharmacology.

At Chapman, an R2-classified research institution, our faculty are devoted to breakthroughs that improve lives. They’re also dedicated educators, translating their experience in innovative research into skill-building opportunities that launch careers.

Research Grant Awards

CUSP researchers secure millions of overall funding annually, ranking third nationwide among R2 institutions. This revenue powers ongoing studies in areas such as neurological disorders, drug discovery and health technology, driving innovation and improving patient outcomes.

Nauli's Discoveries Make Headlines

Surya Nauli, Ph.D., published two groundbreaking studies in high-impact journals: He unveiled a heart-critical protein (PGRMC2) in Nature Communications and a pioneering cilia-based drug-delivery mechanism in Bioactive Materials.

Industry Partners

Chapman University School of Pharmacy researchers work hand in hand with industry leaders to discover and develop new treatments and medicines. Our collaborations in early-stage development, clinical trials and commercialization improve lives and provide students with significant hands-on lab experience.

Industry research partners include:

  • AJK Biopharmaceutical
  • Amberstone
  • Cornerstone
  • Dxome
  • Masimo
  • Merck
  • Paratek Pharmaceuticals
  • Zymo

CUSP Faculty Research Areas

Research at CUSP focuses on some of the most pressing needs in the industry, from novel means of drug delivery to finding ways to make treatments more accessible to those with the fewest resources. Our team of researchers is backed by grants from federal, college, not-for-profit and industry sources.

Our students get to participate in the work through independent or collaborative research projects that often lead to research papers, capstone projects and theses. Pharmacy students at all levels, from our Integrated 4+1 BS/MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences through our Pharm.D. and Ph.D. programs, will have the chance to conduct research alongside faculty; some will even publish their results. And with a 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio, you receive personal attention from world-renowned experts making significant contributions to global health.

Research Opportunities

There are several ways to get involved with the cutting-edge research offered. Many students conduct research alongside faculty during both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Chapman Pharmacy also has post-doctoral fellows and research associates that work in the labs.

On the CUSP

Every month, CUSP publishes monthly recaps of their publications, prestations, grants, awards, and other notable achievments.
