Dr. Yoshika Masuda

Praised by the press for his “undoubted artistry” (The Strad) and hailed as “a remarkable cellist who possesses both intellect and innate musicality... one of the finest cellists of his generation” (Chopin Magazine, Japan), Yoshika Masuda has performed throughout Australia, Japan, China, South Korea, Mexico, the United States, the United Kingdom, and much of Western Europe as a soloist and chamber musician. He is a prizewinner of national competitions in Australia, Japan, and the United States, and was also awarded the prestigious Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe String Award.

Chamber music forms the core of Yoshika’s musical life, and he has performed alongside such renowned artists as Peter Frankl, Bruno Giuranna, Gil Kalish, Cho-Liang Lin, Alissa Margulis, Roger Tapping, Don Weilerstein, Qian Zhou, and the Kronos Quartet. He is a co-founder of the SAKURA Cello Quintet and Darshan Trio, as well as resident cellist of the chamber music collective Salastina. He was formerly the cellist of the award-winning Rolston String Quartet.

A keen advocate of contemporary music, Yoshika has given U.S. and world premieres of works by Reena Esmail, Toshio Hosokawa, Derrick Skye, Bent Sørensen, and Jörg Widmann. Together with colleagues violinist Vijay Gupta and pianist Dominic Cheli, the Darshan Trio is artist-in-residence at Street Symphony, where the ensemble engages in community-based musical initiatives that foster human connection among communities experiencing homelessness and incarceration, with a particular focus on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles.

Born in Kobe, Japan, Yoshika began playing the cello at the age of five and moved to Australia as a young child, where he studied with Georg Pedersen at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He later studied extensively with Hannah Roberts at the Royal Northern College of Music and Ralph Kirshbaum at the USC Thornton School of Music, while also receiving close musical guidance from Thomas Demenga and David Geringas.

Yoshika is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of cellists. His students have achieved success in local and national competitions and have been admitted to leading institutions including The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, USC Thornton School of Music, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He previously served as Visiting Assistant Professor at UCLA and is currently Associate Professor of Cello and Director of String Studies at Chapman University’s Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music. He has also served on the summer faculties of the Montecito International Music Festival, Intermountain Suzuki String Institute, and Yellow Barn Young Artists Program.

His debut album, Hidden Flame, was released on AVIE Records in March 2024 and is devoted to works by women composers. BBC Music Magazine awarded the album four stars, while Classic FM selected it as its “Discovery of the Week.” His second album, A Small Box of Melodies, was released in 2026 and was selected as an “Outstanding Recording” by both Stereo Sound and Stereo Magazine (Japan).
