Biography

Tom Provost co-wrote the Edgar Award-nominated film Under Suspicion starring Academy Award winners Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman.  

His feature directorial debut was The Presence, a genre-twisting ghost story staring Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino, Shane West and Golden Globe Nominee Justin Kirk. The movie won numerous awards on the festival circuit including Best Picture and Best Director and was acquired and distributed by Lionsgate Films.

He currently has projects in pre-production and development with the newly formed Wonder Project and Amazon Studios, including the upcoming film Young Washington (2026).

In addition to teaching at Dodge College, Provost also teaches Cinema Language: The Art of Storytelling, the popular series of classes on filmmaking in Los Angeles and around the country, and works steadily as a script doctor and consultant.

He started the charity Bags and Grace, dedicated to providing immediate relief to the unhoused living on the streets of LA. He remains the owner and CEO of the charity, which distributes bags of food, water and sundries directly to those in need.

Provost is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin's Plan II Honors program, where he received his bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Film, and received his MFA in creative writing from UC Riverside.
