Biography

Vera Ivanova graduated from the Moscow Conservatory (Honours Diploma), Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (MM with distinction), and the Eastman School of Music (Ph.D. in Composition). Her works have been performed in Russia, Europe and the U.S.A.

After teaching as Assistant Professor of Theory and Composition at the Setnor School of Music of Syracuse University (NY), she was appointed as Assistant Professor of Music in the College of Performing Arts at Chapman University (Orange, California), where she currently works at the rank of tenured Associate Professor.

Vera Ivanova's compositions have been described as "...humanistic and deeply felt works... " (John Bilotta, Society of Composers, Inc.). In her early Fantasy-Toccata (2003) for violin and piano, "the humor takes on a harder, sardonic edge recalling the composer's roots in the work of Shostakovich and Schnittke" (Ted Ayala, Crescenta Valley Weekly). In her later Three Studies in Uneven Meters for piano (2011), "the greatest power of her brief, angular, crystalline music lies in its power to provoke the gods of symmetry" (Laurence Vittes, Lark Gallery Online Blog).

Dr. Ivanova is a recipient of the Sproull Fellowship at Eastman, the Gwyn Ellis Bequest Scholarship at Guildhall School, Moscow Culture Committee and American Composers Forum Subito grants, Honourable mention at the 28th Bourges Electro-Acoustic Competition, 3rd Prize at the 8th International Mozart Competition, 1st Prize in Category "A" at International Contest of Acousmatic Compositions Métamorphoses 2004 (Belgium), the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award, the André Chevillion-Yvonne Bonnaud Composition Prize at the 8th International Piano Competition at Orléans (France), and the Special Award from Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music. She is also a winner of the 2013 Athena Festival Chamber Competition and the 2013 Earplay Donald Aird Composers Competition and was selected to be Norton Stevens Fellow at the prestigious MacDowell colony residency in winter 2013-14.

Vera is actively involved in new music not only as a composer, but as an advisor (she's been invited to be on advisory board of the American Composers Forum, Los Angeles chapter), adjudicator (UnTwelve Composition Competition, Synchromy calls for scores, International Computer Music Conference Calls for Music, MTAC Composers Today program Adjudicators Coordinator) and concert-runner/organizer (new music concerts at Chapman University's Conservatory of Music and Synchromy group of Los Angeles-based composers, of which she is a founding member).

Recent Creative, Scholarly Work and Publications: My composition "The Ballade of Santa Ana Winds" for 2 pianists was performed on February 4th, 2024 by faculty staff pianists Janet Kao and Hye-Young Kim at Chapman University, Salmon Recital Hall (Orange, CA). This performance is part of the Keyboard Collaborative Arts Faculty Recital at Chapman University's Conservatory of Music.; On September 7th, 2024 my acousmatic composition "Panic. Melancholy" (2001-02) was performed at SUPERSONIQUE AU COMPTOIR DE LA VICTORINE Festival in Marseille (France). This performance is a part of Supersonique 2024 12-hour marathon concert of electroacoustic music, selected through an international call for scores.; On October 4th, 2024 my newly created composition "Toy Phantasy" for live piano and fixed media (audio and video) (2023) was given a World Premiere by the pianist Luo Ting at the Old First Church Concerts (San Francisco, CA). The original video for this work was created by visual artist Anne Stagg. This performance was a part of "New Arts Collaboration Multimedia Piano Concert".; On November 23rd, 2024, my electroacoustic composition "White Room" (2005) was performed at the Lisboa Incomum (Lisbon, Portugal). This performance is a part of the "Culture and Sustainability 2024" listening room of the Projecto DME, for which works are selected through a competitive call for works.; In 2024 I was a finalist of the New England Philharmonic Call for Scores (NEP). Later that year I was interviewed by Eric Nathan as a part of his "Listening In" broadcasts. The interview was live-streamed on YouTube.; On October 12th, 2024 my newly created composition "Midsummer Rain" for piano and string orchestra (2024) was given a World Premiere at Chapman University's First Gen Orchestra Festival at Musco Center for the Arts (Orange, CA), organized by another Chapman University's CoPA faculty member, Tammy Yi. The piece was performed by a combined high-school student string orchestra from Santa Ana and Garden Grove High Schools.; World Premiere On October 20th, 2024, my newly created composition for two pianos "Mirrored Rain" (2024) was premiered by "Duo Art" pianists Minji Noh and Kookhee Hong at the Daniel Recital Hall, Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, Long Beach State University (Long Beach, CA). This performance is a part of the 2024 CAPMT Conference, which commissioned this work for the conference through the CAPMT Commissioned Composer Award, given as a result of a composition contest. Over the Thanksgiving break, the video recording of the work was done at Chapman University's Salmon Recital Hall and available for viewing.; On March 23, 2024, my piece "Melody for Two Violins" was included in the 2024 American String Teachers Association (ASTA) Conference in Louiseville, KY, which I attended. It was read at the New Music Reading session "Studio" Women Composers (Violin & Viola)". Later this year, the piece was reviewed in "America String Teacher" journal by Ingrid M. Kovacs in Volume 74, Issue 4. .; My composition for digital retuned piano "Mbira" (2012) was performed by Aron Kallay twice: on April 9th, 2024 at the 2220 Arts and Archives (Los Angeles, CA) as a part of "Piano Spheres" concert series featuring Aron Kallay's recital "Alternate Tunings. Past. Future. Perfect. Imperfect," and on April 13th, 2024 at Collage: A Place for Art & Culture (San Pedro, CA) This performance is a part of Aron Kallay's "The Blur of Time & Memory: Alternate Tuning program."; On April 30th, 2024 "The Symphonic Winds of the Pacific" (SWOTP) gave a World Premiere to the work they commissioned from me - "Pacific Overture". The performance took place at Fullerton College, Campus Theatre (Fullerton, CA). The work is dedicated to Stephen Rochford, who conducted the piece. Later this year, the SWOTP performed this work on May 11 at the Home Venue Buena Park High School Performing Arts Complex (Buena Park, CA) and recorded it, publishing the video on their website.; On May 25th, 2024 "The Boston New Music Initiative" (BNMI) performed my composition for chamber ensemble (and toy instruments) "Children's Games" (2018). The performance was a result of the prize that this work received at the BNMI's "1st Annual Historically Excluded Composer Competition" in the category "Historically Excluded Circumstances."; On May 27th, 2024 my audiovisual collaborative work "Melancholy" (2001) was screened at the Lisbon School of Music (Lisbon, Portugal) It was included to the NoiseFloor 2024 festival in result of the competitive call for works.; On June 8th, 2024 my chamber opera "The Double" (2022) produced by "Synchromy" was screened at the Opera America Conference in Los Angeles at Colburn School, Mayman Hall (Los Angeles, CA).; On May 11th, 2024, "Pasadena Chorale" premiered my specially written for them composition "A thirst for water" for SATB choir (with divisi) and organ (2024) at the FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH • PASADENA (Pasadena, CA). This work is a collaboration with a living poetess Rachel Kaufman, who I met at the residency at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, NM. This work was commissioned and premiered by the Pasadena Chorale and its Artistic Director Jeffrey Bernstein.; October 16, 2023: The music score of Vera Ivanova's art song for ensemble of singers and piano "Khaldeyev, Naldeyev..." was accepted for publication in North Star Music's Duets & More book to be published in 2024.; February 23, 2023: Vera Ivanova's composition for flutes and piano "The Laughing Men's Alphabet" received a Special Mention at Musica Prospettiva 4 – International Call for Scores, which received 214 scores by 176 composers from 39 countries.; In July-December 2023 Vera Ivanova completed several commissions: - an art song "I like for you to be still" on Pablo Neruda's poem for Marc Callahan's CD album recording to be released in 2024; - a composition for piano, pre-recorded toy piano and text "Toy Phantasy" for Luo Ting, to be premiered in 2024; - a wind band composition "The Pacific Overture" for Symphonic Winds of The Pacific," to be performed and recorded in 2024.; March 18, 2023: Performance of audio-visual work "Melancholy" at Lund Contemporary Music Festival in Kapellsalen, ODEUM (Lund, Sweden.; March 19, 2023: Youtube Premiere of my piano piece "Karkata," as a part of The Makrokosmos 50 Project commissioned, performed and video recorded by LA-based pianist Nic Gerpe.; April 16th, 2023: Performance of my piece for large ensemble "Still Images" at Hear Now Festival 2220 Arts & Archives (Main Theater) (Los Angeles, CA). This performance is a part of the 23rd Annual IVC Piano Feast Benefit Concert, an exciting extravaganza featuring a medley of pieces performed by the IVC piano faculty and guest artists!; September 14th, 2023: Performance of my audio-visual composition "Melancholy" at Escuta Aqui New Music Festival in Vitória/ES Prazo (Vitória, Brazil). This performance is a part of the Escuta Aqui New Music Festival, held in partnership with the Faculdade de Música do Espírito Santo "Maurício de Oliveira" (FAMES), the Espírito Santo Research Support Foundation (FAPES), and the Graduate Program in Arts at UFES.; November 9th, 2023: Performance of my "Aura" for clarinet solo by Ariana Warren at The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (San Diego, CA). This performance is a part of "Made in California" festival by San Diego New Music.; In April 2023, pianist Nic Gerpe released his album "The Makrokosmos 50", recording the first volume of George Crumb's Makrokosmos and 12 commissioned by him piano pieces by contemporary composers, including Vera Ivanova's "Karkata." The CD was reviewed by many online editions, including Sequenza 21.; In 2022, LA-based pianist Nic Gerpe commissioned Vera Ivanova a new piano piece "Karkata" for his "The Makrokosmos 50" project - a series of concert performances and album recording, released in 2022 on Bandcamp digitally. The album is also available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Youtube.; In 2022 "Synchromy" LA-based composers collective held its first Summer Opera Festival, semi-staging two works by local composers: Vera Ivanova's "The Double" (after Fyodor Dostoyevksy's early novel by the same name) and Ian Dicke's "Roman". The double bills was performed twice on June 4-5, 2022 at the Boston Court Theatre in Pasadena, CA. Prior to the performances, the opera was work-shopped at Chapman University and the workshop was recorded by Chapman students. Being inspired by windy weather, Dr. Ivanova composed "Santa Ana Winds" for two pianists.; On January 8th, 2022 Vera Ivanova's "Sagittarius" for mixed quintet (2015) was performed by "Brightwork" ensemble at Ivy Substation Theater (Pasadena, CA). This performance is a part of Synchromy's Tierkreis project: https://synchromy.org/tierkreis-la/ and was reviewed by Culver City Observer and Sequenza21 (see the link); On February 3rd, 2022 Vera Ivanova's "6 Fugitive Memories, for piano" (2015) were performed by David Kalhous at Opperman Music Hall, The FSU College of Music (Tallahassee, FL). The performance was a part of the Twentieth Biennial Festival of New Music presented by The FSU College of Music and the UMA Concert series.; On February 3rd, 2022 Vera Ivanova's "Fugitive No.2" and "Debutie" from "6 Fugitive Memories" for piano (2015) were performed by a young student Marie Wurtz on Youtube. This performance was reviewed by Sequenza 21 (see the link).; On March 25th, 2022 Vera Ivanova's "Three Studies in Un.even Meters" for piano (2011) were performed by Kowoon Lee at Kossen Auditorium (Columbus, MS) This performance is a part of Music by Women Festival 2022.; On March 25th, 2022 Vera Ivanova's "Children's Games" for mixed quintet (2018) were performed by the CAMPGround22 guest performers at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (Tampa, FL). This performance was choreographed by Central Florida Choreographers collective and performed as part of Contemporary Art Music Project CAMPGround22 festival. The festival was reviewed in Creative Loafing Tamba Bay (see the link).; On May 28th, 2022 Vera Ivanova's "Children's Games" for mixed quintet (2018) were performed by the Inverted Space ensemble at The Chapel (Seattle, WA); On June 21st, 2022 Vera Ivanova's "Sagittarius" for mixed quintet (2015) was performed by tge Brightwork newmusic ensemble at Monk Space (Los Angeles, CA). Silvey on April 10, 2022.; On December 9, 2020, my composition "Electrostatic Whale" for clarinet and pre-recorded track was performed live and streamed online by the clarinettist Oleg Tantsov at “Five evenings” Chamber Festival of the Russian Union of Composers at the Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow Conservatory (Moscow, Russia).; Was commissioned and composed a piece "Karkata" for the "Makrokosmos 50" project by the LA pianist Nic Gerpe. The piece is a companion for George Crumb's "Cancer" from his Makrokosmos, and is going to be premiered and recorded for the CD in 2022 together with the first volume of George Crumb's Makrokosmos and specially written for the project 12 companion pieces.; July 15, 2021 The National Russian Radio Culture broadcasted a program featuring my composer’s profile and the clarinet solo piece “Aura” in the frameworks of the project “New Music” (program 23) organized by the Union of Russian Composers and Radio Culture. The program was uploaded to Youtube.; On June 26, 2021 Synchromy presented twice in live performance its annual project “Urban Birds” at the Aubudon Center at Debs Park – 10 newly commissioned solo instrumental and vocal works dedicated to the birds inhabiting the center (including my piece for the Thai traditional instrument khaen “Mockingbird Hopscotch”).; July 12, 2021-September 7, 2021 The recording of my composition for clarinet solo “Aura” was presented in exhibition “SOLO” (curated by Victoria Korshunova) at Ground Solyanka gallery at the heart of Moscow (Russia), together with other solo works released earlier on the biggest Russian recording label “Melody” label on “Sound Review” series of 6 CD albums.; On August 20, 2021, in result of international call for scores, my electroacoustic composition “Soma” was selected to be featured at the international Futura Festival in Crest, France.; On June 20, 2021, my cycle “In the Deep Heart’s Core” for piano and pre-recorded track was given live performance and streamed online by Eunmi Ko at the Swan City Piano Festival, First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland (Lakeland, FL).; My piece "Palpable breathing" for a rare Thai traditional instrument Khaen was recorded and released on CD and online on Bandcamp on December 4, 2020 by Christopher Adler, Triangulations CD album, LIBEr-Pulveris-Recordings.; My piece "Aura" for clarinet solo, recorded by Oleg Tantsov, was released by the biggest Russian record label "Melody" on Sound Review CD album, volume 5, Catalogue number MEL CO 0607/5.; On November 21, 2020, my composition "Aura" for clarinet solo, was performed by the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble at "The Ensemble Festival fur aktuelle Musik" (Leipzig, GERMANY). The live concert was streamed online globally.; Composed a new piece for Cello, Piano and Electronics "Expectations," commissioned and premiered by mise-en ensemble on January 23rd, 2020 at mise-en place (Brooklyn, NY). CA); October 27th, 2018 Performance of "In the Deep Heart's Core" (for piano, fixed audio and optional projection) (2017) by Tali Morgulis at Dudley Recital Hall (Houston, TX); November 20th, 2018 Performance of my "Children's Games" for mixed quintet (2018) by Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble at the Moscow House of Composers (Moscow, Russia) This performance is a part of the 40th International Moscow Autumn Festival.; November 25th, 2018 Performance of my "Children's Games" for mixed quintet (2018) - Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble Saint Petersburg's House of Composers (Saint Petersburg, Russia) This performance is a part of the 30th "Soundways" festival.; My composition "Summer Going" for female choir was awarded 2nd place at the international "6th International Composer’s Competition Opus ignotum for youth choirs" held in Czech Republic.; Nadia Shpachenko released her CD on Reference Records “Quotations and Homages,” which included the recording of my piano cycle “6 Fugitive Memories” (this composition inspired Nadia to commission other composers for her program and CD recorded as a culmination of multiple concerts she gave with this program). The CD and the concerts with this program were positively reviewed by many well-respected professional magazines, newspapers and web blogs.; My piece for piano "Aftertouch" (the winner of the André Chevillion-Yvonne Bonnaud Composition Prize at the 8th International Piano Competition in Orléans, France in 2008) was selected as one of the pieces suggested to the finalists of the prestigious 61st Feruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in 2017 to be performed in the final round and included into an online roster of contemporary works for the final round.; In summer 2017 I completed a 4-movement piece for piano with optional fixed audio part and projection "In the Deep Heart's Core." The piece is based on recording of poems written by 4 different poets, who recorded their poems and the historical recordings they've made are appearing in the fixed audio part. The piece was commissioned by a consortium of 20 pianists around the globe headed by the consortium leader Nadia Shpachenko, and the project was selected and administered by the GLOBAL PREMIÈRE CONSORTIUM COMMISSIONING PROJECT.; On April 8, 2017 My piece for bass clarinet and fixed audio " Electrostatic Whale" was given an American premiere at the New Horizons concert series, by "Splinter Reeds" ensemble at Salmon Hall, Chapman University (Orange, CA); On June 8, 2017 "Little Giant Chamber Chinese Orchestra" gave a World Premiere to my piece for Qudi, Sheng, Guzheng and Erhu "Skyward" at the National Recital Hall in Taipei, Taiwan.; On July 13, 2017 "Panic Duo" ensemble performed at "DuoFest" Synchromy concert my piece for violin and piano "Fantasy-Toccata" at the Boston Court (Pasadena, CA).; On October 22, 2016 Calliope’s Women performed 2 songs from my vocal cycle "Four Drinking Songs" at their "Voices in Verse and Song" concert at Old North Church (Marblehead, MA).; On October 23, 2016 Brightwork newmusic ensemble performed my piece for mixed quintet "Sagittarius" at Harvey Mudd College Drinkward Hall, (Claremont, CA).; On October 11, 2016 Logos Foundation performed my acousmatic composition "Panic. Melancholy" was performed at the Matera Intermedia Festival 2016 at MUSMA + CASA CAVA (Matera, Italy).; On August 7, 2016, Grammy-nominated pianist Nadia Shpachenko performed my "6 Fugitive Memories" at "Sundays Live" series at LACMA in Los Angeles, CA. The concert was broadcast live on KUSC classical music radio station.; In July 2016, I applied with the Grammy-nominated pianist Nadia Shpachenko with my project to the Global Premiere Consortium Commissioning, and my project was selected on a competitive basis for a commission by a consortium of pianists around the globe.; On December 13, 2016, Grammy-nominated pianist Nadia Shpachenko officially premiered my "6 Fugitive Memories," commissioned by her for the performance at The Spectrum (New York, NY).
