Biography
Professor Turk currently serves as the Interim Dean and Professor of Strategic Management at Chapman University’s Argyros College of Business and Economics. He also served as Dean from 2017-2022. After completing his Ph.D. at the University of California, Irvine in 1988, Professor Turk served on the faculty at Texas A&M University before joining Chapman University in 1992. In his previous tenure as Dean, Argyros Collegelaunched an MS in Real Estate, increased its faculty by nearly 50%, and enjoyed the fastest rise in national rankings of any business school.
Professor Turk lectures widely in executive education programs for both public and private organizations. He frequently consults with businesses on strategic planning,acquisitions, strategic change, and executive compensation issues. He has also served as an expert witness on top executive compensation and business valuation. Professor Turk’s current research and consulting assists firms in reducing bureaucracy and increasing their capacity to take entrepreneurial initiative. Previous consulting and management training clients have included: Ford Motor Company, Newmont Mining, Time Warner Communications, Toyota, Boise Cascade, Allergan, Koch Industries, Texas Instruments, Microsemi, Marsh McLennan, Volcom, First American Financial, Hyundai, Ingram Micro, and numerous public, private, and non-profit organizations.
Professor Turk's academic research focuses on the impact of corporate strategic decisions on firm market value. Specifically, he has examined how the stock market reacts to announcements of acquisitions, alliances, hostile takeovers, and diversification decisions. His research on mergers and hostile takeovers has been reprinted in Critical Writings in Economics:Corporate Governance and The Management of Corporate Acquisitions, both collections of articles by internationally recognized scholars. His research on acquisitions and strategic alliances has also appeared in leading academic journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Economic Inquiry,Journal of Management, and the Journal of High Technology Management. His most recent work has focused on how firms can manage decision making authority to use resources more efficiently and encourage entrepreneurship.
