Biography

Stephanie Liapis is an artist and educator based in Southern California. She received a B.F.A. from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and an M.F.A. from the University of Washington. Her thesis work at the UW focused on writing embodied dance criticism for undergraduate and graduate students.

Her research has three main areas of engagement: creative work in performance, media, and choreography; the restaging of professional choreographic work; and original pedagogical inquiry. She creates environments for interaction that emerge from interdisciplinary, collaborative processes.  Recently, these collaborations address the relationship between audience and performer and the elasticity of space between two people.

Her professional performance career spanned nearly 20 years and includes work with New York City companies, Doug Varone & Dancers and Nicholas Leichter Dance, Susan Marshall & Company, Nancy Bannon, the MET Ballet, Netta Yerushalmy and Aquila Theater among others. She has taught extensively across the country and abroad and she continues to teach for and restage the professional works of Doug Varone.
