Biography
Dr. Yun "Sherry" Wang, Ph.D., is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Chapman University
School of Pharmacy (CUSP), where she leads the Research Center for Healthcare AI Initiative.
Her research program adopts an interdisciplinary approach that integrates methodologies
from machine learning, epidemiology, clinical pharmacy, health economics, and health
services research to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes. With international
experience across Asia, Australia, and the United States, Dr. Wang possesses a comprehensive
understanding of healthcare system complexities, which informs her development of
widely applicable solutions.
Dr. Wang's research leverages real-world data (RWD) and advanced analytical techniques
to address critical challenges in healthcare. She focuses on optimizing care pathways,
particularly for chronic disease management and addiction, by identifying strategies
to enhance healthcare delivery efficiency and effectiveness. Dr. Wang addresses issues
related to access to and quality of care, particularly for populations impacted by
substance use disorders and those facing challenges in obtaining care.
Her scholarly work has been published in some of the most respected journals in her
field, including JAMA, The Lancet, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and Neuroepidemiology.
Dr. Wang also serves on the editorial boards of several prominent journals, including
Scientific Reports and Health Economics, and has contributed to special issues, such
as "Opioid Epidemic during the COVID-19 Pandemic" in Healthcare. Additionally, her
research has garnered attention in media outlets such as ISPOR News Across Asia, Physician
Weekly, HealthHats Podcast, and Health Design Podcast by the Journal of Health Design.
Dr. Wang’s work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health’s AIM-AHEAD
program, the McGovern Foundation's McGovern Training Program in Trusted AI, the Office
of Research at Chapman University, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy
(AACP), and the CRE2 at Washington University in St. Louis. In recognition of her
groundbreaking work, Dr. Wang has received several prestigious awards. She was honored
with the AACP New Investigator Award in 2022, and in 2025, she was named a finalist
for the Women in AI Awards North America in the "AI in Research Award – AI Researcher
of the Year" category, a recognition that highlights her significant contributions
to the intersection of AI and healthcare. Dr. Wang has also received fellowships and
scholarships from organizations such as the China Health Policy and Management Society
(CHPAMS) and the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP). Her research has
been referenced in key policy documents, including a report by the California Legislative
Analyst’s Office (LAO) and the Washington State Department of Health COVID-19 Literature
Situation Report.
Her dedication to fostering the next generation of researchers is evident through
her mentorship, which has resulted in one of her Ph.D. students receiving the James
L. Doti Outstanding Graduate Student Award, the highest honor for graduate students
at Chapman University. Dr. Wang is a dedicated mentor who is deeply committed to guiding
graduate students, visiting scholars, undergraduate students, and high school students
in their academic and professional growth.
