Biography
Olivier Armantier is a Professor of Economics at the Economic Science Institute at Chapman University. Before joining Chapman in 2024, he spent nearly two decades at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he held several research and leadership positions, most recently as Economic Advisor and Head of the Consumer Behavior Studies Department. Earlier in his career, he was a professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Université de Montréal. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1999.
His research combines economic theory, laboratory and field experiments, and empirical analysis to address questions of both academic and practical significance. He has published extensively in leading economics and finance journals. Olivier Armantier is one of the economists who developed and launched the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Survey of Consumer Expectations, which has become an important source of information on households’ economic expectations and behavior. Working with Charlie Holt, he also developed and experimentally evaluated auction mechanisms for the Federal Reserve, which were subsequently used to sell trillions of dollars in financial assets. He is also one of the foremost researchers on how to mitigate Discount Window stigma, a phenomenon that limits central banks’ ability to act as lenders of last resort during financial crises.
Throughout his career, Olivier Armantier has sought to combine rigorous academic research with practical applications. His work reflects a commitment to using economic research to inform the design of markets, financial institutions, and public policies.
