Biography

Jeff Swimmer is an award-winning director, producer, author and educator. He has been a full-time professor at Dodge College since 2008, teaching courses in documentary production and the history of the doc genre. A Fulbright Scholar, he also leads domestic and international documentary production classes and workshops, including at universities and film schools in Switzerland, South Africa, Brazil and Italy, among others.

Swimmer is the author of Documentary Case Studies: Behind the Scenes of the Greatest (True) Stories Ever Told (Bloomsbury, 2015), a popular college textbook that delves into how filmmakers overcame challenges to create their Oscar-nominated documentaries.

As a filmmaker, Swimmer has produced and directed films for PBS, BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, CNN and Arte (France/Germany). His films explore a variety of themes including social issues, wildlife, the environment and historical subjects.

He was a co-producer and co-writer of The Synanon Fix (2024), a four-part series that premiered at Sundance and aired on HBO about a group established to treat addicts that devolved into a violent cult.

The quirky festival hit UnRaveling (2021), which he directed and co-produced, is a borderlands saga about a violent encounter between soldiers of Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa’s rebel armies and two mysterious Eastern European immigrant brothers.

Swimmer is proud to have nurtured the careers of many young documentary filmmakers over the years. Most recently, he oversaw the production of The 17 Percent, from filmmaker Aaron Johnson ’24, which won a Student Academy Award in 2024.
