Bruce Bales is the director of the Early Music Ensemble at Chapman University. Since 2000 he has regularly given guest lectures and workshops on early music performance practice for Chapman’s music history classes. He has also been the Director of Choral, Vocal and Early Music at Golden West College in Huntington Beach since 1992.
He has taught choir, voice classes and co-directed the Collegium Musicum at the University of California, Irvine. He regularly performs both as a baritone soloist and as an early music instrumentalist (playing viols, lutes, cornetto, sackbuts, recorders, crumhorns and hurdy-gurdy). He regularly directs honor choirs, guest lectures, leads workshops and adjudicates festivals throughout Southern California.
In 2006 Dr. Bales was the Artistic Director for the Haut Alps Choral Festival in Gap, France and in 2010 the Huntington Beach Arts Counsel recognized Dr. Bales as their “Arts Educator of the Year.”
