Software and Operating System vulnerabilities are released every day.

An updated operating system and third-party applications ensures that your system is not vulnerable and cannot be exploited by a malicious program.

Older operating systems have vulnerabilities that have been published and are actively exploited.

Microsoft Windows 10 comes with an antivirus pre-installed. Please check that it is enabled if you do not have a third party anti-virus
Chapman University does not provide recommendations for a specific antivirus program
We recommend using one of the established antivirus solutions purchased from a trustworthy retailer.

Make sure your antivirus is set to automatically receive updates.
This is usually done in the settings of the program.

Ensure that your wireless network uses strong encryption - a password is requested to join the wireless network both for home use and Guest Wireless network.
Chapman University Information Security recommends that you use WPA2 or WPA3 (where available)
WEP is an outdated and vulnerable wireless encryption standard - we advice against using WEP.
Please consult your wireless router's help manual or help webpages for how to check or change the encryption method.

A default password is a password that was enabled by default on your device, operating system. It can be usually found in the owner's manual or home pages (use a search engine to look up your model number+default password)

Set a strong password or PIN to secure your computer, laptop or Handheld device.

Ask yourself: "If my device was lost or stolen, what would a complete stranger gain access to if my device was not password protected?"

Additionally, we recommend encrypting the hard drive of your device.

Simply put: The password is the only thing that is between you and the hackers (unless you use Multi-Factor Authentication). Treat it as you would your car or home key.
Everything you see, someone who has your password would be able to see.

Follow the following recommendations

Don’t Reuse Passwords
Change your password regularly
Use a passPhrase (not a passWord)
Don’t use personal information that can be guessed or obtained online
Whenever possible use an extra layer of security – such as Multi Factor Authentication.

Phish emails are wolves in sheep's clothes.
Most often they pretend to come from a legitimate source or provide a legitimate service when in fact, they are just trying to steal your password.

Multi Factor Authentication is a method of authenticating a user using something they know (password)and something they have ( an application installed on their phone, a desk phone call).
Chapman University uses Multi-Factor Authentication for its employees.
We strongly recommend enabling multi factor authentication for your personal accounts as well.
Banks, Online retailers, email providers usually provide Multi Factor Authentication.
