This is the current list of research-related software packages and toolsets available on RTS clusters, servers, and cloud computational resources.
In-depth discussion of specific research software packages / toolsets is available in the menu to the left. Options for collaborative work are listed below.
Microsoft OneDrive
Tool Name: Microsoft OneDrive
Availability: Faculty, Staff, Students
Strengths: Broadly available to most institutions. Simultaneous editing of Office documents.
Limitations: Requires external collaborators to have an institutional account to sync files to their computer. IS&T can provide accounts upon request.
PHI Policy: Yes**
Max Storage: 5TB or more***
Notes:
** Storing PHI on these solutions requires adherence to the information security best practices; particularly MFA and drive encryption.

Google Drive
Tool Name: Google Drive
Availability: Faculty, Staff, Students
Strengths: Broadly available to most institutions. Strong cross-device support. Simultaneous editing of Google documents.
Limitations: Features may be limited depending on use case. Not appropriate for sensitive data. Limited storage.
PHI Policy: No
Max Storage: 40GB (Faculty) or 5GB (Students).
Microsoft Teams
Tool Name: Microsoft Teams
Availability: Faculty, Staff, Students, Guests
Strengths: Chat, file collaboration, and app integrations (GitHub, many others). Similar to Slack.
PHI Policy: Yes**
Max Storage: 25TB

RedCap
Tool Name: RedCap
Availability: Faculty, Staff, Students, Guests
Strengths: Secure tool for online database and surveys.
Limitations: Guests require manual account creation.

Availability: Faculty, Staff,
Strengths: Data stored on premise. No extra encryption or MFA requirements.
Limitations: Not for external collaborations in most instances. Requires VPN for external access.

Office365 Groups
Tool Name: Microsoft Office365 Groups
Availability: Faculty, Staff, Students
Strengths: Self service mailing list functionality & file storage.
Limitations: No easy file syncing to local computer.
PHI Policy: No

DropBox
Tool Name: DropBox
Availability: Faculty, Staff
Strengths: Easy to use interface
Limitations: Not available to students. Outside collaborators may need their own paid accounts.*
