This program is open to both BA and BFA dance students. Over the summer, you will perform, train, teach, rejuvenate and explore in the beautiful seaside town of Cefalu in Sicily, Italy.

This intensive includes:

  • A final concert shared with local musicians and hosted by the city’s mayor in a beautiful historic theater.
  • Residency opportunities and master classes with acclaimed Italian artists.
  • Pedagogy partnerships with local studios.
  • Boat excursions, equine therapy, day trips to Palermo and fantastic food.

“The Cefalù experience expanded my understanding of dance as something deeply connected to place, culture, and lived experience. Observing daily life and cultural rhythms in Cefalù broadened my movement vocabulary and reinforced dance as a living archive informed by history and community. Overall, the trip contributed to my artistic education by deepening my understanding of dance as not only a technical practice or performance, but also as a means of engaging with the world and cultivating embodied awareness.”

International internships and external opportunities

We can work with you to find internship opportunities abroad. We can also connect you with international summer programs outside of Chapman.

These programs are not related to your Chapman coursework, but they can be a good way to grow as a dancer while going abroad.

  • International internships and similar programs offer hands-on experiences and valuable networking opportunities.
  • They can be a great way to enhance your portfolio and gain a global perspective as a dancer.
  • Please note that some pre-approved international internships are allowed for credit if they are with a U.S.-based company. All registration for international experiences goes through the Center for Global Education (the study abroad office at Chapman).

Semester abroad

For Dance students, one of the best ways to include a semester-long study abroad experience at Chapman is by completing general education (GE) courses while abroad (as opposed to your core Dance classes).

  • Our main Study Abroad page provides great general information about these opportunities.
  • Be sure to check the program details, as some semester abroad opportunities may have prerequisite courses.
  • Dance students looking to go abroad for a semester will often apply for a program their first year and go abroad during their sophomore year. This is because:
    • Semester-long programs require you to apply a year in advance.
    • As a sophomore, you will have more options to take lower-division GE classes or fulfill your minor requirements.
    • We don’t offer Dance-specific semester abroad programs, meaning going abroad as a sophomore to fulfill GE requirements is a good use of your time.
    • You are able to fulfill those requirements early so that when you return, you can dedicate your time to core dance courses on campus.

Funding your international experience

Our study abroad scholarships can help cover the costs of studying in another country.

If you go abroad during Interterm or summer session, you may also qualify for a one-time tuition waiver. You can find more information on our Summer Programs page.

What’s Interterm?

Interterm is a special four-week session in January between fall and spring semesters, offering immersive, short-term courses. This often includes 1-4 week faculty-led travel programs abroad. These programs can fulfill major, minor or general education credits, and allow deep dives into unique subjects without disrupting regular semester schedules.

Studying abroad in other disciplines

Studying abroad isn't limited to your major. It can also be a great opportunity to fulfill other degree requirements or explore your interests.

Aside from your major, you can also use your study abroad experience to:

  • Fulfill non-major requirements, including requirements for general education (GE) classes or a minor.
  • Enhance your language skills through immersion in another country.
  • Explore new subjects outside your major and broaden your perspective.
