Make Art That Matters

The Power of a Creative Practice
Art at Chapman is more than studio time; it’s a way of engaging with culture and society. In the BFA in Studio Art, you’ll develop both technical skill and conceptual depth, gaining the tools to communicate your ideas and transform the world around you.

Interdisciplinary Studios
From ceramics and sculpture to photography, painting, drawing, video, and transdisciplinary projects, our courses encourage experimentation across media. Classes such as Art and the Environment, Art and Science, and Contemporary GalleryPractice connect studio work to real-world issues and professional contexts, providing a broader vision of what art can achieve. In addition, we offer small classroom sizes and close mentorship. Faculty know your work and help you refine it. Collaborative critiques and hands-on projects foster an environment where risk-taking and discovery are supported, and your individual voice as an artist can grow.

From Studio to Professional Practice
As a Studio Art major, you’ll participate in juried exhibitions and showcase your thesis work in Chapman’s Guggenheim Gallery. You’ll also build experience through internships. Graduates go on to careers in galleries, museums, arts organizations, design studios, film and media, teaching, and independent studio practices, armed with the critical and creative skills to thrive in a range of fields.

Your Creative Future Starts Here
Whether you’re sculpting, experimenting with new media, or building installations, Chapman’s Studio Art BFA gives you the freedom to explore and the guidance to refine your vision. You’ll leave with a portfolio, professional exhibition experience, and the ability to articulate your place in the contemporary art world.

BFA in Studio Art, Intergrated Educational Studies minor
I chose Chapman for it's small, supportive campus community and the ability to balance athletics and academics. Courses like Advanced Sculpture, Art & Science, and Curatorial Practice not only deepened my skills but sparked lifelong passions. Study abroad experiences and field trips to LA galleries enriched my understanding of the contemporary art world. I also had incredible hands-on opportunities, including editorial internship at Juxtapoz magazine and a SURF research project on marine debris that led to curating an international art exhibition.
