[updated 12/2/20]
Rules and regulations regarding animal care and use come from many sources. This webpage addresses those which are derived and come primarily from Chapman University as the institution. Policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and guidelines are described here.
Additionally, the campus animal facilities and researchers will maintain their own specific technical documents related to animal care and use. Many are included with protocols and receive IACUC oversight.
Overview
In addressing non-compliance and other issues pertaining to animal welfare, the Chapman IACUC will be informed by this document: "Ensuring due process in the IACUC and animal welfare setting: considerations in developing noncompliance policies and procedures for institutional animal care and use committees and institutional officials". Its opening statements set the tone:
"The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the attending veterinarian (AV), and the institutional official (IO) — together with principal investigators (PIs) and all research personnel — have the collective institutional responsibility for assuring the welfare of animal subjects used in teaching, research, and testing." and
"Every institution that is involved in research with animals is expected to have in place policies and procedures for the management of allegations of noncompliance with the Animal Welfare Act and the U.S. Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals."
This section of the IACUC website collects the documents in support of regulatory compliance and animal welfare at Chapman.
