• Booth, Louise Fulfilling a Dream: The History of Chapman University (Villa Park, California: D.R. Booth and Associates, 2001), 340 pp.

Fulfilling a Dream is the first book-length history of Chapman University. According to the author, Louise Booth, an Orange County historian, this book “highlights the achievements and adversities of a small bible college that developed into a respected university.”This well-written and well-indexed history provides a detailed chronicle of student life, academic departments, campus architecture, and faculty, staff and administration.  Notably, this illustrated history won a prestigious award, given by the Los Angeles based Rounce and Coffin Club, and is included in the 2002 Western Books Exhibition, which is composed of books that are the year’s best examples of printing and design.

This article focuses primarily on the history of Chapman University in Orange, California.  It explains the history of the Orange campus, formerly Orange Union High School, and expertly describes the architecture of the original buildings which are on the National Register of Historic Places.  There is also a short history of Chapman University dating to its Hesperian College roots.

This brief article describes Chapman’s early history, the L.A. years, the Orange years from 1954, provides a short biography of the university’s namesake, C.C. Chapman, and includes a highly informative timeline that covers the years 1850 through 1978.

• Dahle, David L.  Wilkinson Hall (Lubbock, Texas: Texas Tech University, 1977) 26 leaves

This thesis provides the history and background of one building, Wilkinson Hall, which began its life in 1904, the first building of Orange Union High School.   Originally called “Central”, Wilkinson Hall was designed by L.A. architect A. Dudley and constructed by R. J. Noble Company of Long Beach.  It is named in honor of J.E. Wilkinson who was a trustee, chairman of the board and acting president.  Wilkinson Hall has the distinction of being the oldest continually occupied building of education in Orange County.

• Delp, Paul.  All the Days / in the Life and Thought of Paul S. Delp, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy (s.l.: Delong Press, [1979?]

This autobiography by Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, former

alumnus (’28), and pacifist, Paul Delp, tells the story of his life and chronicles his long history with Chapman University.  Delp began teaching for

California Christian College in 1932 and retired from Chapman College in 1973.  The Delp Wilkinson endowed chair in Peace Studies is named after

this inspiring leader and author of many books on peace and Christianity.

• Moore, Jim  Tales From the Small Time : a Celebration of Small College Athletics (Orange, CA: Chapman University Press, c2000) 241pp.

Jim Moore, a former sports information director at Chapman, relays his memories of the coaches, athletes, and events in the small-college Division III arena.

• Morris, Marilyn Lee  A History of the Chapman College Residence Education Center System, 1958-1982 (Thesis (Ph.D) University of Akron, c1983), 293 pp

This well documented history of Chapman’s off campus education centers  includes a brief history of the university and World Campus Afloat.  The thesis covers the beginnings due to “the military’s need for on-base academic programs” (p. 231), covering development, growth, and expansion.  Appendices include charts of locations, enrollment figures, degrees awarded, revenues and a list of presidents and administrators.

• Sayre, Arlene Reasoner  Chapman Remembers: A History of Chapman College (1969), 42pp

This informative pamphlet was written by Mrs. Sayre, a professional writer hired by the university, to commemorate the fifty-year anniversary of the incorporation of California Christian College in Los Angeles in 1918.  The history of the university is divided into three segments, “The Founding Years,” the “Years of Dedication,” and the “Years of Realization.”  Covering the years from 1861 through 1968, this history is illustrated and well-indexed.  “A Chapman Chronology” follows the index.

• Weatherill, David.  Chapman  University Athletic Heritage (compiled by David Weatherill and Bill Parker, 2000) 2 v. in 1 in various pagings

According to the preface, this work covers a period of 80 years, 1921-2000, and is presented chronologically by school years (September-June).  David Weatherill, Professor Emeritus of Chapman University and alumnus, class of 1951, and Bill Parker, alumnus, class of 1952, spent hundreds of hours in researching Chapman athletics and compiling the statistics that went into this publication.  Vol. 1 is entitled “Chronology of Chapman Athletics by Decade” and Vol. 2 is entitled, “Chapman Team Sport Chronology By Year.”

This invaluable history of Hesperian College in Woodland, California, Yolo County, Chapman University’s antecedent, began as a Masters thesis by the author in 1960.  This illustrated and indexed study begins with the founding of Hesperian in 1861, presents financial information, discusses the administration, faculty and curriculum, students and graduates.  Appendices include courses of study, clubs and their membership, names of students enrolled by year and graduates by year.

This beautifully illustrated book gives the history of shipboard education, before and after its affiliation with Chapman University, and takes the reader on a visual tour of the countries and peoples visited by students who traveled and studied on the S.S. Universe.

This thesis touches upon the early history of shipboard education with its inception in the early 1920’s during its affiliation with New York University.  Under Chapman College, shipboard education began in 1965 on the M.S. Seven Seas and soon voyages were made on the newer S. S. Ryndam, and finally on the S.S. Universe.  Due to financial difficulties, Chapman terminated the program following the Fall, 1975 sailing.  During the Chapman years, the program was first named the University of the Seven Seas and then renamed World Campus Afloat.  A new period of shipboard education began in 1977 when the Institute for Shipboard took over the idea of a “floating campus” and was called Semester at Sea.
