Key components of job searching and applying

Before beginning your job search, you can set yourself up for success by booking an appointment with Dodge’s Career Center and using the available resources.

Additionally, consider the following components that will lead you to professional success:

Showcasing your creative work

In the entertainment industry, your portfolio can often be as important as your resume.

Whether you're a filmmaker, screenwriter, or pursuing a completely different path, having a well-curated portfolio that highlights your best work will help you stand out to potential employers.

Here are some key tips:

  • Select your strongest work: Highlight projects that showcase your strengths and tailor your portfolio to align with the job you're applying for.
  • Organize effectively: Ensure your portfolio has a clear structure. Start with your most impressive pieces and make navigation intuitive, especially for digital portfolios.
  • Include context: Provide brief descriptions of your projects and their objectives, and any noteworthy challenges you overcame. This helps potential employers understand your creative process.
  • Make it accessible: Ensure your portfolio is easily shareable, whether through a website, PDF, or an online platform like Vimeo. Make sure all links work and that your portfolio is mobile-friendly.
  • Keep it updated: Continuously refresh your portfolio with new, relevant work. Regular updates show your growth and keep your application materials aligned with current industry trends.

Additionally, Dodge’s Career Center can help you polish your general resume and/or portfolio before you send it out to potential employers. Book an appointment with the Career Center to get started!
