When you’re seeking jobs with clinical decision-making responsibility, or simply an edge in the job market, experience counts. You’ll earn it through Chapman University School of Pharmacy’s postgraduate training programs. 

These one- and two-year paid residencies and fellowships provide instruction, mentorship and hands-on clinical practice and training that accelerate your career.

You can choose from a range of settings and specialties, including geriatric, inpatient and ambulatory care. And our teaching certificate program equips you for academic roles or to become a mentor yourself. 

While your Pharm.D. degree prepares you for many positions in the industry, a postgraduate year (PGY) provides the experience needed for advanced roles and can speed up your eligibility to earn Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification.

Residency Programs

Residency programs build on the knowledge you’ve gained as a Pharm.D. student. In a Postgraduate Year One (PGY-1) program, you’ll develop general clinical skills while working directly with patients. Postgraduate Year Two (PGY-2) programs offer in-depth training in specialty fields, including oncology, cardiology and pediatrics. 

Participants earn stipends, benefits, and paid holidays. In 2024–25, the School of Pharmacy placed students in residencies and fellowship programs in nine different states, including California.

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at SCAN-Chapman

Engage with senior-focused managed care pharmacy practice and management through this one-year program offered in conjunction with SCAN Health Plan. Achieve core managed care competencies as you participate in care teams, review coverage, work with Medicare Part D regulations and more, while also completing a year-long, outcomes-based research project.

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at City of Hope-Chapman

Gain extensive experience at City of Hope in Duarte, one of America’s top cancer hospitals, in areas such as:

Hematology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
Surgical and medical oncology
Infectious disease
Critical care
Pediatric oncology

You’ll complete a series of rotations in this one-year program, which is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Network-Chapman

Learn about population health management and managed care in an ambulatory care setting in this ASHP-accredited program. In addition to taking core clinical rotations, including travel consultation and immunization services, anticoagulation and diabetes, you’ll also have the chance to participate in elective rotations tied to your interests and complete a year-long research project.

PGY-2 Medication-Use Safety and Policy at City of Hope-Chapman University

Take a lead role in enhancing patient safety and compliance as you build expertise in implementing improvements to the medication-use system. This advanced program at City of Hope prepares residents for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, along with board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Chapman-Amgen Oncology Medical Affairs Fellowship

This two-year fellowship combines clinical training with hands-on experience at Amgen, one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies. You’ll begin by completing six months of rotations in two oncology practices, gaining direct patient care exposure. Then you’ll spend the next 18 months at Amgen’s headquarters in Thousand Oaks, where you’ll build skills in scientific communications, as well as medical information and strategy.

Your experience in hematology-oncology disease areas and medical affairs puts you in an ideal position for roles in the pharmaceutical sector.

Teaching Certificate Program

As a pharmacist, teaching is part of the job. Whether you’re educating patients on medications or serving as a preceptor to pharmacy students on rotations, you’ll be called upon to communicate and explain — even if you never set foot in a classroom. 

Participants in each of our residency and fellowship programs also complete the School of Pharmacy’s Teaching Certificate Program. Over the course of a year, you’ll participate in teaching workshops, deliver lectures to both student pharmacists and learners at your training site, and help mentor other IPPE/APPE students.
