Hands-On Learning

» Hands-On Learning Opportunities

In the Fowler School of Engineering, you’ll experience a truly immersive environment, which includes solving real-world problems in the classroom and through research with faculty and industry partners.

Create in the Classroom

You won’t sit through a lot of lectures here. Instead you’ll be in small, collaborative classes. You’ll spend your days working with other students and world-class faculty, gaining experience and solving challenges.

There are few limits on what you can work on and accomplish. Here are just a few examples.

Grand Challenges Initiative

The GCI is a unique two-year project that is part of the curriculum for all incoming first-year students with majors in Schmid College of Science and Technology and Fowler School of Engineering. You’ll work within a small team of 4-6 fellow students and a research mentor to take on one of our most pressing problems, from reversing climate change to improving data security to developing new health technology—and many more.

Visit the Grand Challenges Initiative site to learn more.

Research with Faculty

Undergraduate students at Chapman often work with faculty on innovative research, learning about professional practices and industry guidelines along the way.

Chapman was recently elevated to the high research activity (R2) designation by the Carnegie Classification of Higher Education. This put us in the top 10% of universities in the country. More importantly, it means we’ll be able to:

  • Attract (even more) great faculty and industry partnerships
  • Pave the way for ambitious and exciting faculty research, which means you’ll be taught by professors who are on the cutting edge of their field
  • Provide additional internships and opportunities to join faculty-led research projects

Intern with Industry Leaders

Internships provide you with real-world experience that expands your knowledge and creates career opportunities. Chapman also allows students to earn college credit at paid internships.

We’ll help pair you with a company that aligns with your interests. We have industry partnerships with software engineering, cyber security, defense, aerospace, game development companies—and many more—throughout Southern California. In addition to several others, our students have interned with the following companies.

5 Tips for Getting an Internship

Computer Science major Ashley Wood completed an internship with Rhapsody International (Napster), where she built a music player that demonstrates the company’s software. Visit our webpage to read her tips for getting an internship while in college.
