»Killefer Community Space
The historic Lydia D. Killefer School building on Olive Street has been thoughtfully renovated and is now open as the new home of Chapman University’s Institute for Quantum Studies and Advanced Physics Laboratory. This state-of-the-art facility supports nano-scale, non-emitting research while preserving the building’s architectural integrity and deep cultural significance.
Originally opened in 1931, Killefer School holds a powerful place in civil rights history. Located in the Cypress Street Barrio district, it became one of the first schools in California to desegregate—welcoming students of all backgrounds in 1944, three years before the landmark Mendez et al. v. Westminster case. That case, which originated in Orange County, helped set the legal foundation for Brown v. Board of Education and the nationwide end to school segregation.
Today, the building honors that legacy through a dedicated exhibition in its restored historic lobby. A semi-public community room and enhanced outdoor areas were also created to foster connection and accessibility. In addition to serving as a hub for advanced scientific research, select areas of the building, including the community room, will occasionally be available for community use.
