Dance Live Audition Process

» Dance Live Audition Process

Select applicants to the Bachelor of Arts in Dance program will be invited to a live audition as part of the admission process. For those selected:

  • You will receive an email invitation from the program. The invitation will include audition dates and links to register.
  • You can choose whether to have your live audition in-person (on Chapman's campus) or virtually. The format you select will not affect admission consideration.
  • Your dance can be in any style or genre and we encourage you to be creative in whatever you choose. You can select the same solo you performed in your pre-screen audition video or a new one- to two-minute piece.
  • You should wear form-fitting dancewear with appropriate shoes. Please do not wear skirts, t-shirts, shorts, sweats or costumes.
  • If you cannot attend a live audition, your pre-screen audition will serve as your final audition.

Preparing for Your Live Audition

In-person Live Audition Schedule

In-person auditions will take place on the Chapman University campus. They will begin with a brief class to warm you up and introduce you to faculty and peers. You will then present your solo to a member of the faculty. Please bring your music on a digital device (phone, tablet, etc.) or laptop.

In addition to your in-person audition, we encourage you to explore campus using the self-guided tour app you can download on your phone.

Virtual Live Audition Schedule

For virtual live auditions, you will need to be available for the full 4-hour window. The audition will begin with an information session. Your parents are invited to join us for this portion. You will learn more about the program, hear from current students and have time for a Q&A with faculty and students.

Next, you will join a faculty member in a Zoom breakout room where you will share your short solo and participate in a brief interview with the faculty member.

Please be prepared to perform a 1-2 minute solo in a space you can adequately dance and be seen in, ideally free of furniture. You will not be evaluated on your space; we’re evaluating your movement on:

  • Technique: core strength and alignment, physical conditioning, movement coordination
  • Performance: intention, expression, focus, dynamics, musicality
