»Using AI to Interpret Course Evaluations
Once you receive your course evaluations...
Step 1: Analyze the Student Feedback
Pull up student comments from some recent end-of-course evaluations.
- Identify any comments that are not useful or relate to things that can’t be changed (e.g., class meeting time).
- Identify and celebrate what is going well for students (course strengths).
- Identify areas for improvement. Consider modifications to improve the course, materials, and/or instruction.
- Do any of the comments reference a “non-negotiable” in your course or approach?
Step 2: Using AI to Analyze Feedback
- Copy and paste the course evaluation comments into ChatGPT or Copilot (https://copilot.microsoft.com – sign in with your Chapman credentials)
- Writing the Prompt:
- Assign AI a Role: “You are a university professor wanting to improve the student experience and success in your course. You have just received course evaluations with student feedback.”
- Give AI a Task: “Analyze these comments to identify three things that students like or appreciate about the course/instructor and three areas for improvement.”
- Provide More Specificity: “Provide a summary report of the strengths and areas for improvement in the course and/or instruction. For the areas needing improvement, provide some strategies to consider.”
