English proficiency and test scores

Our minimum English undergraduate requirements are:

  • TOEFL: an 80 iBT (with balanced sub scores) or 20 per section on the revised paper-delivered test
  • IELTS: a 6.5 (with balanced sub scores)
  • Duolingo English Test: 120

All applicants who are non-native English speakers must submit proof of English proficiency. Students graduating from secondary schools where English is the language of instruction will automatically be reviewed for a waiver of this requirement.

Students who score at least a 600 on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, or a 24 on both the ACT English and Reading sections, will automatically have the English proficiency requirement waived. Only official SAT or ACT scores will waive the English proficiency requirement. Self-reported scores will not be used for this purpose.

Transfer students who are completing college coursework in the United States must have completed a transferable English course or 30 transferable hours in a traditional classroom setting to be eligible for an English proficiency waiver. Online English courses will not satisfy this requirement.

Official academic documents

International applicants must provide official copies of academic records from all secondary or senior secondary schools, pre-university programs, and colleges and universities attended. Applicants should:

  • Have all academic records sent directly from their schools (whenever possible).
  • Submit all academic records in the native language, accompanied by a certified English translation (if the native language is not English).
  • Send external examination results or predicted results. Examples: predicted IB results, Indian board exam results, GCSE/IGCSE results, predicted A-levels, Australian ATAR, etc.
  • Submit any additional documents as requested by the Office of Admission.

Documents must be sent to Chapman directly from the issuing institution.  Official transcripts can be emailed to intladmit@chapman.edu from an official school email address, or may be sent in a sealed envelope to our physical address:
