Creative Supplement Instructions

»How to Apply - Creative Supplement

Mark your calendar: same deadline as your application

You will get access to your Creative Supplement 24-48 hours after submitting the Common Application. Since the Creative Supplement is due five days after your application, you should submit your Common Application at least a few days before the application deadline.

The Creative Supplement (sometimes called a portfolio at other institutions) is where you will showcase your artistic talent as part of the Chapman application.

If you're applying to any of the programs below, you'll need to submit a Creative Supplement for review by the department and faculty:

  • Animation and Visual Effects (BFA).
  • Art (BFA).
  • Art History (BA).
  • Broadcast Journalism and Documentary (BFA).
  • Composition (BM).
  • Creative Producing (BFA).
  • Dance (BA).
  • Design (BFA).
  • Film and Media Studies (BA).
  • Film and Television Production (BFA).
  • Music (BA).
  • Performance (BM) (any emphasis).
  • Pre-Music Education Certification (BM).
  • Public Relations, Advertising and Entertainment Marketing (BA).
  • Screen Acting (BFA).
  • Theatre (BA).
  • Theatre Performance (BFA).
  • Writing for Film and Television (BFA).

Each program has its own requirements, so be sure to read through all instructions (below) carefully before you begin. Also, please note:

  • Your Creative Supplement is due five days after your Chapman application. It is submitted via your Application Status Page.
  • You will gain access to your Application Status Page within 24–48 hours of submitting your Common App. We recommend submitting your Common App a few days early so you have plenty of time to upload your materials before the deadline.
  • If you run into any trouble uploading your materials, check out our Creative Supplement Upload Tips below.
  • A Creative Supplement is only required for your first-choice major. We will contact you if we need any materials for your second-choice major.

Letter(s) of recommendation tip

All applicants to Chapman are required to submit at least one letter of recommendation. Your recommender should speak to your academic abilities and character.

If you're applying to a program that requires a Creative Supplement, you can request an additional recommender to address your creative talents and interests. However, this is not required. Either way, all letters of recommendation are requested and submitted through the Common App.

Creative Supplement video upload tips

If your program requires a video and you are having difficulty uploading it, here are troubleshooting recommendations:

  • You might get an error because your file is too big (close to or over 2 GB). Larger files can stall out on wireless connections. We recommend compressing your file to well below 2 GB using an online compressor. If you Google“video compressor” you should be able to find several free options.
  • If you are uploading an .mov file, try changing the file type to mp4 or other accepted format.
  • If your Application Status Page shows that we have received your Creative Supplement Media Upload (the green checkbox), but there is an error in your file, you can delete your Creative Supplement Media and upload a new, corrected version.

If you are still having issues uploading your Creative Supplement, please contact us at admission@chapman.edu or (714) 997-6711.
