The Language Planning Form helps you plan how to fulfill Chapman's language requirement. By completing this form, you'll receive personalized academic advising to guide you through the process.
At Chapman, you are required to take language classes as part of your General Education requirements.
But if you already speak, read and write in a language besides English, you can try to:
- Waive out of your language requirement.
- Place in a higher-level language class (above beginner level).
- Start fulfilling your language requirement with a beginner level course.
The Language Placement planing form is an optional form that will help determine which option is the best for you.
Who should complete this form?
- All incoming first-year students.
- Transfer students who haven't fulfilled their language requirement.
Why complete this form?
Chapman requires all students to fulfill a language requirement as part of their General Education. This form helps us provide you with accurate academic advising support based on your language abilities.

How to submit
Log in to the Language Planning Form using your Chapman email and password.
Your options
On the form, you can select the option that best describes your plan:
Option 1: Waive the requirement completely
You may qualify if you have:
- AP/IB scores or college credit at 201 level or higher (view required AP scores or IB scores).
- Language proficiency: can pass an exam demonstrating fluency in a non-English language.
- International high school education: completed all years at a non-English-speaking high school abroad.
Option 2: Place into a higher-level class
You can reduce the number of language courses you need by:
- Taking a placement exam (recommended if you studied a language in high school).
- AP/IB scores or college credit at 101 or 102 level (view required AP scores or IB scores).
Option 3: Start with beginner-level courses
You can also begin to fulfill your language requirement by taking an with introductory language class.

Please also keep in mind:
- The Language Placement Planning Form is optional.
- Submitting this form does not affect your ability to take or waive language classes at Chapman. The form is only meant to guide you on how best to complete your language requirement.
