Chapman University I Attallah College of Educational Studies
Mentor teachers provide vital support to credential candidates in Attallah College of Educational Studies Teacher Education (TE) programs. This webpage includes professional development materials and resources to facilitate effective mentoring and to better link Chapman coursework with clinical practice.
Training and Resources
Chapman University observes California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) standards by implementing a practice that ensures all mentor teachers are trained in order to successfully mentor Chapman University teacher candidates. As part of CTC standards, mentor teachers are required to meet or verify 10 hours of training.
Each prospective mentor teacher is required to complete a survey that identifies the need for mentor training. If the survey results indicate that the mentor teacher meets the training expectations, then no further action is needed. Should the mentor teacher not meet the training expectations, then they will proceed to completing 10 hours of training, which includes the following:
1. Teacher Education Handbook (2025-2026)
2. Read and view the following resources on mentoring a Chapman University teacher candidate:
- How Video Helps Teacher Candidates Self-Reflect
- Examining the Literacy Standard & TPEs for SB 488 Certification – Part I
- Examining the Literacy Standard & TPEs for SB 488 Certification – Part 2
- Certification Process for Literacy Instruction in Teacher Preparation Programs
3. Read CTC's California Teacher Performance Expectations (TPEs).
4. View Cognitive Coaching & Mentoring: Types of Coaching Moves & Their Purposes (13 minute video).
5. Visit the Annenberg Learner website, and select one or two content-specific pedagogy and instructional practices multimedia resources that focus on your desired learning.
6. Visit the CAST website for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) learning and inclusive practices resources.
7.Visit Mentoring Virginia to learn more about their asynchronus modules and resources. Modules provide 10 hours of training.
