Select applicants to Music programs will be invited to a live audition as part of the admission process. For those selected:
- You will receive an email invitation from the program. The invitation will include audition dates and links to register.
- You can choose whether to have your live audition in-person on the Chapman University campus or virtually.
- Be prepared to perform the material required for your instrument and for the specific degree program for which you are applying. You may be asked to play scales, sight read or play an excerpt from the audition repertoire in addition to interviewing with your specific music program director.
- Please wear appropriate attire, such as what you would wear to perform in a jury or a recital. Please no jeans, t-shirts or sneakers.
- If you cannot attend a live audition, your pre-screen audition will serve as your final audition.
Preparing for your Live Audition
In-person Live Auditions
In-person live auditions will take place on the Chapman University campus. They will begin with a 30-minute program welcome to introduce you to faculty and peers. Parents are welcome to join for this portion.
After that will be your live audition. This will be approximately 15-30 minutes. You will be called to audition one-by-one with the faculty. Be prepared to perform the material required for your instrument and for the specific degree program for which you are applying. You may be asked to play scales, sight read or play an excerpt from the audition repertoire.
In addition to your in-person audition, we encourage you to explore campus using the self-guided tour app you can download on your phone.
Virtual Live Auditions
The live audition will take place via Zoom. Please be available for the full four hours.
The session will begin with a 30-minute welcome and general program overview. Your parents are invited to join for this portion.
After that will be your live audition. This will be approximately 15-30 minutes. You will be asked to remain logged onto Zoom with your camera off. You will be called into a breakout room when the faculty are ready for you.
Be prepared to perform the material required for your instrument and for the specific degree program for which you are applying. You may be asked to play scales, sight read or play an excerpt from the audition repertoire. Some guidelines for your Zoom audition:
- Set up your camera to allow for a 3/4 body shot.
- Use a distraction-free background with adequate lighting and audio. We need to see and hear you clearly.
