Preparing for the Audition

Toggle Section

Singing Portion (1 Video)

  • You may perform one or two songs, however, total duration of the audition should not exceed two minutes. If you choose to submit two songs, include both songs in the same video.
  • You must caption your video(s) with your full name, title of the song(s), and the corresponding composer/lyricist.
  • The admissions committee wants you to present the best of your vocal abilities and we encourage you to demonstrate your vocal range. There are no style requirements.
  • The singing audition must include either live or recorded accompaniment. There are many free, high-quality instrumental tracks available online. We encourage you to ensure that your sound is balanced before submitting videos.
  • "Slating" is encouraged, but not necessary.

Acting Portion (1 Video)

  • You may perform one or two monologues, however, the total duration of the audition should not exceed two minutes. If you choose to submit two monologues, include both monologues in the same video.
  • You must caption your video(s) with your full name and the title(s) of the play(s) from which you monologues are excerpted. We discourage you from performing monologues found in monologue compilation books or comparable online resources. You are encouraged to find monologues from plays and perform them within the full context of each dramatic narrative.
  • "Slating" is encouraged, but not necessary.

Dancing Portion (2 Videos)

  • All applicants who register to receive the audition announcement will be sent instructional videos containing exercises and a brief combination of steps for the dance portion of the audition. The audition announcement and instructional videos are sent in September, approximately two weeks before the submission deadline. You are required to learn the exercises and combination and submit videos of yourself performing both. Exercises should be contained in one video and the combination should be contained in another video.
  • Not all admitted applicants will be allowed to take DANC 134 and DANC 138; some will be placed in DANC 100. You will be informed of your dance placement upon admission to the musical theatre minor program.
