»Disruptions in the Leatherby Libraries

The Leatherby Libraries is committed to providing a welcoming, safe, and comfortable environment for study, research, and collaboration. To maintain this positive learning environment, disruptions are not permitted in the library. Strong odors or loud noises that interfere with others’ ability to use the library are considered disruptive. These guidelines establish expectations to ensure shared spaces remain usable for everyone.

Strong Odors

Library users are expected to refrain from introducing odors that substantially disrupt the library environment. Odors may include, but are not limited to:

  • Body odor
  • Strong fragrances (perfumes, colognes, essential oils)
  • Smoke or vaping residue
  • Strong food-related odors

An odor is considered a disruption when:

  • It is strong enough to be noticed by others at a nearby distance (e.g., complaints, visible discomfort, staff observation).
  • It interferes with the ability of others to remain in the space.

Loud Noise

Library users are expected to refrain from making noises that substantially disrupt the library environment. Noises may include, but are not limited to:

  • Loud conversation or yelling
  • Computer Audio or Music
  • Facetime or Phone calls
  • Teams or Zoom meetings

Noise is considered a disruption when:

  • It is loud enough to be heard by others at a nearby distance (e.g., complaints, visible discomfort, staff observation).
  • It interferes with the ability of others to remain in the space.

Library users found to be causing a disruption are expected to comply with directions from library staff to resolve the issue.
