»Moving Out

The end of the semester doesn’t just mean finals—It also means moving out. While the process is simple, it never hurts to be prepared. Read on for more information on moving out, a general move-out timeline, and more.

Spring Move-out 2026

Check-out appointments must be within 24 hours of your last in-person Spring final exam or on Saturday, May 23, 2026 by 5:00 p.m. — whichever comes first. You can also check out any time before your last final as well. Please review the final exam schedule to determine your move-out date and time.

Move-out Process

Near the end of the spring semester

  • You will receive an email from your building manager: This community-wide memo will include specific information about checking out of housing.

  • Sign up for a check-out time: The community memo will include a link to sign up for a check-out time. If you have questions about checking out, you can email reslife@chapman.edu or contact your building manager.

Early May

Attend a community meeting in your building (if applicable): At this meeting, you will learn about the move-out process so that you can prepare to move out yourself. If your community is hosting a meeting, then it is mandatory to attend.

Late May

Check out of your building: You will formally check out by visiting the check-out location in your building at your check-out time. This includes having building access removed from your student ID (make sure to have all of your belongings moved out before checking out).

  • Bikes left on campus over summer will be donated. Bike locks will be cut and disposed of.
  • Vehicles will not be allowed to remain on campus over summer unless you are a summer-housing resident. Please make the necessary arrangements to take vehicles home or place them in storage. Vehicles left on campus are subject to towing.
  • If there is damage in your residence, it will be noted and you will be emailed regarding the damages, amount billed to you and appeals information.
  • Typical damages that are billed include missing window screens, holes or paint peels on the walls, carpet stains, broken furniture and failure to clean the room.
  • Be aware that damage assessments will be conducted after residents have completely moved out of their space.
  • Donation bins will be in the residence halls and apartments so that you can donate any items you no longer need.
  • You are responsible for removing all items from your room. Unwanted items must be disposed of or donated properly.
  • Before leaving for the summer, check your mailbox and the package room to pick up any last-minute mail or packages.
  • Any mail or packages that are received by the university after May 22 will not be accepted and will be returned to sender.
  • If you plan on receiving packages near the end of the spring semester, they must be shipped in a timely manner. The mailrooms will also have limited hours during finals week. Mail will not be forwarded, so please plan accordingly.
  • During the summer/fall we are unable to open mailboxes in the mail room and will not be able to collect mail from any box. Please plan accordingly.
  • We highly recommend changing/updating any subscriptions, billings or Amazon accounts, as well as notifying friends and family about a change of address. If Business Services or the Office of the Registrar use your university address, also notify them of the change.

  • If you rented a microfridge from Collegiate Concepts, it will be picked up directly from your room.
  • At checkout time, microfridges must be unplugged, defrosted, cleaned out and labeled with the name of the student (your name). If the microfridge is not cleaned out or is missing during pickup, you may be held financially responsible for the cost of replacing the unit.
  • If you are a summer-housing resident, you will need to email your building manager for more instructions regarding microfridges.
  • Family and friends who will be helping you move out can park in general parking spaces in the Jim Miller Parking Structure or Sandhu Parking lot.
  • For family and friends of students in Chapman Grand, parking is available in the Chapman Grand Parking Structure.
  • Please make sure family and friends do not park in fire lanes or reserved parking spaces.

Thoroughly remove all trash from your room before your check-out time.

  • Trash rooms will still be available, and large bins will be placed near each housing community.
  • If the trash room is full, inform an RA and take items to the large bins outside.

To accommodate everyone’s trash, please take large items directly to the bins in the parking lots.

  • Do not bring U-Hauls, attached trailers or storage cubes. They are not allowed on campus.
  • Vehicles that do not meet the 7’0” will not be allowed to enter parking structures. We recommend that you make other moving and storage arrangements.
  • Vehicles with storage on top of their cars cannot enter the Jim Miller Parking Structure or Sandhu Parking Structure.

Move-out Tips

  • Communicate move-out day plans with your family. Talk to your family members about when and how you will be moving out, especially if they will be helping you with the process. Keeping them informed will make things easier for all of you. Be sure to communicate your plans with your roommate(s) as well!
  • Confirm your final exam schedule. Before you sign up for a checkout time, make sure you know when your last final exam takes place. This is important because you need to move out within 24 hours of finishing your last final.
  • Plan your storage and shipping options. Planning these out in advance will help immensely in the long run. Consider the following tips:
    • If home is less than a few hours’ drive away, you may find it easiest to move your belongings there — as long as you have the space and transportation to do so!
    • If home is not close enough to drive, you may want to consider storage options like Campus Storage or Storage Scholars (see below). Reservations fill up quickly, however, so try to schedule storage services in advance.
    • If you live in a different state or country, shipping your belongings home may be the best option. While shipping can be costly, it will minimize the amount of luggage you have to bring with you.
